The Soviet Union tried to spread communism to other nations. The U.S. trued to top that spread. If a side would seem to gain control, the other side would respond with new and improved programs. The competition came to the two nations trying to get to the moon.
The Competition
In 1958, Congress passed the National Defense Education Act (NDEA) which meant that schools would be given more funds to teach science and mathematics. Texas was one of many states to contribute from these funds.
After the launch of Sputnik, John Kennedy founded NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). One of the main goals was to be able to put people on space.
4 years after Sputnik, the Soviet Union launched a human into space. Later that year, the United States launched astronaut Alan Shepard into space. President John Kennedy, announced that his goal was to put a person on the moon by the end of the decade.
On the moon
Walter Cunningham piloted the module on Apollo 7. This flight was supposed to be the way for the moon landing.
July 20, 1969, NASA reached its goal. Astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped from the space vehicle onto the moon.
Later NASA returned to the moon and Alan L. Bean became the 4th person to walk on the moon.
