OCS Driver's Education

Driver’s Education classes are set to begin on December 1st across Onslow County high schools. The state of North Carolina requires anyone under the age of 18 to complete a driver education course consisting of at least 30 hours of classroom and a minimum of 6 hours of behind-the-wheel instruction. To be eligible to register for a class session, students must be 14 years and 6 months old by the first day of class. However, in order to manage a backlog of students created by the recent “pause” in Driver’s Education funding, initial classes will require students to be 15 on the first day of class.

For the 2015-2016 school year, the actual cost to provide Driver’s Education classes is $250.00 per student (30 hours of classroom instruction and 6 hours behind the wheel). The state has provided funding at a rate of $163.00 per student. Because of the significant difference, the school system has established the fee of $65 to be paid by the student in order to offset the costs associated with the program.
