Thanks and Updates

I imagine many of you are currently operating outside of your comfort zone and doing things you didn't ever think you'd have to do. I found the beautiful picture above last week and it really helped me calm down and try again when things weren't working at our house. Hopefully it can be a source of inspiration to some of you too.

Thank you for hanging in there with us as we all navigate this new learning style. Things are changing and we receive new information daily (sometimes multiple times per day), so please bear with us as we make adjustments to our schedule, expectations, and meeting plans. Thank you so much to those who have sent messages and emails with encouraging words, those who have shared videos and pictures of your students practicing, those whose families participated in our March Madness listening assignment, and those who have offered suggestions and helpful tips. We are truly in this together and we appreciate all of you for continuing to be supportive of our band program. We LOVE our Hawk Band Family!

At this time, the quickest way to see updates we are sharing is through your student's Google Classroom band class. We will continue to use Remind, Smore, Charms, Skyward, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and to share things with you, but because all of students are completing work in Google Classroom, that will be our first posting location.

We will be posting an average of 2 assignments in Google Classroom per week, for your students to complete within a week's time. They will receive 1 rhythm quiz per week, 1 listening/music history assignment per week, and/or 1 recorded playing assignment per week.

We are not currently requiring students to submit Charms practice logs, but do still expect them to be spending time practicing their instruments daily. We dobencourage students to keep track of their daily practice in Charms so they are still in the habit of entering their minutes when we begin taking this grade again. We will be posting practice assignments in Google Classroom as well and will use their weekly recorded playing assignment to connect to their daily practice assignments.

Virtual Meeting Expectations/Norms

We need to make sure our students are following the expectations we set for them. Please be sure to adhere to the following expectations:

  • Do your very best to be in a QUIET environment.
  • Use headphones if you have them.
  • Press "mute" (left button under your video) IMMEDIATELY UPON joining any meeting.
  • Wear school-appropriate clothing.
  • If you are using the (preferred) video feature, we must be able to see your face and hands--especially when we are playing!
  • Setup your practice area to promote great playing posture. Use a chair (no bed) and music stand if at all possible.

Charms Practice Logs UPDATE

We would love our students to continue inputting their practice minutes in their Charms Practice Logs each day (to continue being in the habit), however, we WILL NOT be taking a grade on this for the time being. That will most likely change in the next few weeks and we will let you know when we begin taking grades for practice logs again.

If you are having trouble logging into Charms, please contact Mrs. Becker to have your password reset.

This link shows step by step how to log minutes in Charms. Please contact Mrs. Becker or Mr. Urban if you have any questions.
