Futuristic Eco-Friendly House of Science
Questions and Answers about the House of Science
How would you create a “green” environment around your home? Which plants would you include in your design?
To make an environmental or ‘eco-friendly’ household, I would plant Heart Leaf Philodendron, Golden Pothos, and Bamboo Palm for a high quality of Carbon Dioxide filter for your household. According to the NASA, these plants are one of the best air filter your house. Having good indoor air quality is important to everyone especially to those who spend a lot of time indoors. Through this we can stay healthy and keep your household eco-friendly. Also I would not cut the trees on back except for the garden because cutting trees could destroy different animals’ habitat. Losing animals’ habitats could prevent their protection in predators which means it could make them extinct by cutting trees. Therefore I shouldn’t cut trees to save the animals’ habitat. Lastly, my home will be in Madagascar (in the biome of savanna part of Madagascar in specific) because Madagascar has 70% of the world’s willife so that means Madagascar is one of the most untouched wildlife in the world. This suggest that this country is a good place environmentally because the country is not polluted as urban cities are in developed countries.
What plants would you “farm” in your vegetable garden?
I would farm fruits like oranges, apples, pomegranate and vegetables like bitter melon, spinach, cauliflowers, and lettuces in vegetable garden so that I could easily find food to eat and not waste money buying food and farm plants that could live in the biome of this house. I would not use any fertilizers and any pesticides because using pesticides could damage the food chain in wildlife and keep our endangered animals ‘away from the edge’ of being extinct. Also using fertilizers could make the plants unhealthy which could make the food we eat are using poisonous.
What mode of transportation would you choose to park in your driveway?
The transportations that is parked in my driveway is a water-fueled Honda Pilot 2014. This certain vehicle requires water (like I said earlier). As you put water to fuel this vehicle, the car goes to process called water splitting where the hydrogen particles and oxygen particles are being separated. From there the hydrogen (H2) is being taken to be used as fuel for this certain type of car. I picked this vehicle because economically and environmentally, it would save me money and the earth at the same time as it wouldn’t rely on oil from the ground and from fossil fuel so I wouldn’t burn holes on our ozone layer and burn my money.
What types of waste management systems would you include in your home design?
The type of the waste management systems that I would choose are separating wastes, recycling, and composting items. I can introduce garbage bins, recycling bins, and composting bins to reduce the work that the recycling depot and save our planet at the same time.
Which endangered species would your family sponsor at your local zoo?
The endangered species that my family would sponsor at my local zoo are Asian Elephants, South China Tigers, and Saolas. All of these animals are considered, currently, ‘critically endangered’ which means they are at the very edge of being certainly wash their whole species out. Also, I picked these animals because not all animals could live in habitats in savanna so I picked animals that would be suitable for this biome and country.
Research three chemicals found in your home which can be toxic to humans or your pets...
The chemicals that can found in this house are hypochlorite (bleach), sulfuric acid, lead (wet cells/ batteries), sodium hydroxide, and potassium (oven cleaners). Hypochlorite in bleach can irritate skin, eyes, nose, and throat. If ingested, it can cause esophageal injuries, stomach irritations, and prolonged nausea and vomiting. Sulfuric acid and lead from car batteries are toxic to any living thing because the sulfuric acid fumes are very irritating and when you accidentally had contact with this, it can cause serious burning of the skin. Lead is very toxic in any way of how it accumulate in our bodies. Lastly, sodium hydroxide and potassium in oven cleaners are very corrosive and can burn your skin and your eyes.
Choose one of the chemicals and identify the elements which make up this chemical
The elements that are included in sulfuric acid (H2SO4) are hydrogen, sulfur, and Oxygen. This means that sulfuric acid contains 2 hydrogen particles, 1 sulfur particles and 4 oxygen particles in specific. This is the picture of a covalent bonding diagram for Sulfuric Acid.
Which group or chemical family of the Periodic Table is this chemical located in?
The chemical family or group that sulfuric acid’s elements are all non-metal although they do not belong to any chemical family. Hydrogen is from Group 1, Period 1, Sulfur Group 16, Period 3, and Oxygen is from Group 16, Period 2.
Is your chosen element a metal, non-metal or metalloid?
The elements from sulfuric acids are all non-metals.
What type of electrical energy source will you use for your home?
For this house, there are at least two electricity sources which are through solar and wind. I have chosen at least two electricity sources (solar panels and wind turbine) so that I can make sure that the whole house could be provided with electricity. Also, I picked renewable sources so that I would not waste non-renewable sources like uranium and so that there will be always be a way to get electricity for my house.
What types of physical structures make a house more energy efficient?
The physical structures that makes a house more energy efficient are making a house with a lot of windows and insulated roof and walls. Making a lot of windows can improve the ventilation of the house for a warm biome. Also, insulated roofs and walls could prevent heat from the sun for a warm biome.
What type of appliances will you choose for your home?
In general, the appliances that will be in this house are Energy Star appliances because it uses less volts than normal appliances so that my solar panels and wind turbines would not need a lot of electricity but the efficiency of the appliances are great without using a lot of volts.
What type of light bulbs would you include in your home design?
The types of light bulbs that will be included in my home design are LEDs (Light Emitting Diode) and CFLs (Compact Fluorescent Light) because they are the revolutionary energy conserving light bulbs. The CFLs are 10 times better than the incandescent light bulbs since it requires 50-80% less energy than the incandescent light bulbs. The LEDs are long-lasting, durable, prevent heat from the bulb, and mercury-free light bulbs so it is an energy efficient and less poisonous/ dangerous.
Include at least two different types of technology in your future home that has been developed or researched due to space exploration. Describe how these technologies were invented.
The two futuristic technology that is going to be included in my house are ‘Nutrima’ and ‘Mab’. Nutrima is a kitchen tool that basically analyzes the food you are going to eat. It calculates how much nutrients, possible toxins and the freshness of the prepared food or fresh ingredient. Mab is a mini-robot designed to clean your house just like the iRobot but this device is connected to internet so that you can be updated to the device is doing, report a progress, or even making weekly set-up for cleaning schedules.
