ABORIGNAL LANGUAGE
Language is extremely important to the aborginal peoples. Languages carry cultural knowledge, so the loss of language means the loss of cultural, of Aboringnal people's connections to their ancestors.

Language is important because that's is the way they communicate to each other. There Language is like there spirits. When they eat or find a new place to live a new spirit is born.

PLACE NAMES
The Aborignal names for shellharbour has been recorded as both Yerowah (meeting place) ,and Wonwin, (place where there were big fish). The Eurpean name Shellharbour refers to the large quanitites of shells found in Aborignal middens along the foreshore in the early to mid 9th century. Due to the minning of shells in the mid 19th century for the production of lime these vast middens no longer remain.
