Halloween Guidelines
Halloween is quickly approaching and the staff at Spry would like to make this day a safe and fun day for all students, whether they choose to wear a costume or not. It is not expected or required that all students dress in costume.
1) It is expected that Tuesday October 31, 2017 will be a regular day of instruction.
2) All costumes must be appropriate for the school day.
" Your costume must allow you to be able to read, write, type, and see the board.
" Costumes must meet the guidelines of the Webster Central School District dress code. For example, undergarments may not be worn as outerwear just because it is Halloween. Pajamas are not appropriate and are not permitted. Look in the mirror. If you have any questions about your outfit, don’t wear it!
" Shoes or sneakers must be worn at all times. Slippers or socks are not appropriate for the school building due to safety issues.
" Masks are not to be worn on the school bus. It will be left up to the dis cretion of each teacher as to whether students may wear a mask in the classroom.
" A costume is something that is worn, anything that is carried is not acceptable.
"If you decide to color your hair for Halloween, the color must be washed out before school on Tuesday, November 1st..
"Please use common sense and good judgment.
" REMEMBER, IF YOUR OUTFIT IS DEEMED INAPPROPRIATE YOU WILL BE ASKED TO CHANGE.
During each lunch period we will have a costume contest, sponsored by Spry’s Student Government.

School 17 Project
Student Council School 17 Project
This year, Spry will again be collecting gifts for School 17, which is Webster's sister school in the city of Rochester. For most of these children, the holiday gift that they receive from us is the only gift they get.
We usually need to purchase approximately 175 gifts, and gift collection should begin sometime in early November. The list of needed items will be posted on Spry's webpage as well as in the Principal's Newsletter, once we start collecting items.
Spry's Student Council, along with several parent volunteers and other Webster schools, are all a part of this exciting project. Several students from Spry will participate in the delivery of gifts to School 17.
Thank you in advance for all of your help and support. Without you this would not be possible! If you have any questions regarding this project, please feel free to contact Terri Rogers.
Notes from the Nurse
NOVEMBER NOTES FROM THE NURSE:
MEDICATIONS: District policy forbids students to carry medications, including over-the counter medications, such as Tylenol, Motrin, cold medicine unless an Independent use & carry form is signed by both doctor and parent. (These forms are available on the Nurse’s website)
A parent must bring any medication to the Health Office that is not Independent Use & carry as per above. All medications without this Independent Use & Carry order must be delivered to school by an adult.. Students carrying unauthorized medications are subject to suspension from school.
STUDENTS ON CRUTCHES: Please do not send your child to school on crutches without FIRST talking to the nurse, so that appropriate safety procedures may be discussed & implemented. An MD restriction note for PE/sports needs to also be provided to the Health Office upon your child’s return to school after the injury. Please make sure your child is
wearing a supportive shoe on the uninjured extremity, not a flip-flop or sandal.
PHYSICAL EXAMS: All 7th graders and new entrants to WCSD need to provide the Health Office with a copy of a physical exam dated 9/1/16 or later.
WINTER SPORTS: Any 7th and 8th grade students interested in playing a Winter sport will need a physical dated 11/1/16or later and a new Winter Sport Registration through FamilyID. No extensions are given on old physicals. Sports signups are all on line at WWW.familid.com Paper sports forms are no longer available.
COLD & FLU SEASON: Just a reminder that most everything we learned about preventing infectious diseases we learned from our moms & dads: Wash Your Hands, Cover Your Mouth & Nose When You Sneeze, Throw Away Your Tissues Promptly and then Wash Your Hands!
INFLUENZA (The Flu): is usually in season from October through March. Remember it is easily transmitted through the air (sneezing) & close personal contact. Cold & flu viruses can linger on doorknobs, telephone receivers and other surfaces. It is important to wash your hands frequently & try to avoid rubbing your eyes & nose or putting your hands around your mouth.
Keep you child at home if:
* they have a Fever greater than 100.4 orally. (your child must be fever free without fever reducing medications for 24 hours before returning to school).
*Child is too ill, sleepy or lethargic to sit all day in school.
*Severe headache, especially if accompanied by a fever (contact your healthcare provider).
*Severe sore throat, with fever or lethargy, lasting longer than 48 hours (contact healthcare provider). Reminder: If your child has had a throat culture for strep, he/she may NOT be in school until the results are known. If your child is diagnosed with strep, he/she MUST be on antibiotics 48 hours before returning to school.
LICE: Head lice are always in season, even more so as the weather gets colder. Head lice are also an equal opportunity pest. If your child is scratching his/her head, you may want to check for lice. Other symptoms may include:
∙ a tickling feeling or a sensation of something moving in the hair;
∙ irritability and sleeplessness; and
∙ sores on the head caused by scratching. These sores caused by scratching can sometimes become infected with bacteria normally found on a person’s skin.
Head lice are transmitted through brushes, pillows, towels, hats and head-to-head contact. Please remind your children:
∙ Avoid head-to-head (hair-to-hair) contact during play and other activities at home, school, and elsewhere (sports activities, playground, slumber parties, camp).
∙ Do not share clothing such as hats, scarves, coats, sports uniforms, hair ribbons, or barrettes.
∙ Do not share combs, brushes, or towels. Disinfest combs and brushes used by an infested person by soaking them in hot water (at least 130°F) for 5-10 minutes.
∙ Do not lie on beds, couches, pillows, carpets, or stuffed animals that have recently been in contact with an infested person.
Control of the environment is the greatest factor in preventing re-infestation. Head lice cannot live away from their human host for more than 24 hours. Nits take 7-10 days to hatch, another 7-10 days to mature and live approximately 30 days on a host. Lice cannot live on pets. Steps to control the environment include:
∙ Machine wash and dry clothing, bed linens, and other items that an infested person wore or used during the 2 days before treatment using the hot water (130°F) laundry cycle and the high heat drying cycle. Clothing and items that are not washable can be dry-cleaned OR sealed in a plastic bag and stored for 2 weeks.
∙ Vacuum the floor and furniture, particularly where the infested person sat or lay. However, spending much time and money on housecleaning activities is not necessary to avoid reinfestation by lice or nits that may have fallen off the head or crawled onto furniture or clothing.
∙ Do not use fumigant sprays or fogs; they are not necessary to control head lice and can be toxic if inhaled or absorbed through the skin.
Webster Central School District is a No-Nit District. Nits are laid by live lice. If nits are identified, the student must go home. Consult your healthcare provider for appropriate treatment. The student will not be allowed back in school until all nits are removed. A parent/guardian must accompany the student to school the next day (do not send on the bus)
so the school nurse can check the student’s hair for nits. If any are present, the student
must go home. When the student re-enters school, the school nurse will check for nits at 7,
10, 14, 21 and 30 days.
Spry's Track Stars
On October 13, Mrs. Walzer took 5 of our students to Brockport State College to compete in the Empire State games for the Physically Challenged. These games are an excellent way for students who have physical or multiple disabilities to participate in events competing against other athletes who have similar abilities. Lizzie Koster, Aurora Olcott, Breanna Becker, Landon Milella and Jessica Miller were all selected to compete in a variety of different athletic events throughout this fun filled day. They were partnered up with a “buddy” from Spry (our fantastic WEB leaders) Angelina Buechel, Chloe McWilliams, Kristen Vignare, Andraia DiPisa, and Hannah Secor. All of these students spent the day competing, laughing and making new friends. We would call this a successful day away from Spry.
*** If you see Jessica, Landon, Breanna, Aurora or Lizzie today be sure to congratulate them!! They sure deserve it for all of the medals they won!!
