Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter
Volume 27, Issue 10, October 15, 2019
From the PFC President
Aloha...
One of the things that makes Thornhill work is the involvement of our parents, and our students. And a great example of that was this past weekend at the Fall Sweep. We should all say a word of thanks to everyone who dedicated part of their Saturday to cleaning and freshening up the school.
Another big thank you goes to Rebecca Andersen, who for more than a year, has served nobly as our PFC secretary, taking the minutes of PFC meetings and ensuring that information is available to everyone. However, Rebecca is starting a new doctoral program and needs to step down from her secretarial duties. As such, we are in need of a new secretary, and this is a great opportunity to get involved with the PFC. If you are interested, please contact me, or any other PFC board member you know.
I'd also like to stress us being good neighbors. To St. John's Church, which graciously lets us use their parking areas during the school day. To the people who live across the street from Thornhill (please, as easy and tempting as it may look, please don't do U-turns in their parking area during pickup and drop-off times). To all the retailers near Thornhill, and especially to the staff and owners of 7-Eleven, where a robbery occurred on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago. Just keep in mind who you at many times are representing when you are out and about in the school's area.
And, when it comes to being a good neighbor...Our neighbors at Joaquin Miller Elementary could use some of our help. Joaquin Miller is holding its school auction on Saturday, November 2, at 5:30pm at the Sequoia Country Club, and they could use some Thornhill volunteers to help out with the event. And they will give us a hand in return when we hold our annual auction early next year. If you can spare a couple of hours on the evening of Nov. 2, you can sign up at this link.
As always...Mahalo...
Rex Crum

Support Thornhill at the Walkathon!
Saturday, November 2 is our annual Walkathon, so don't forget to set up your child's pledge site at funrun.com so they can gather pledges (it is super quick and easy - we promise!). It is a fun day for everyone. You can expect prizes, music, a bake sale booth, a book swap, spirit wear, a hosted parties booth, Otter Pops, a Round Table pizza truck and, of course, kids walking and walking and walking and walking! All in support of our amazing programs at Thornhill! Siblings and prospective Thornhill students are welcome to join us.
It takes a village for this event to run smoothly, so please consider helping out! Sign up on Konstella.

If your kid’s room looks like this...
What do clutter and the Walkathon have in common? Not much! But if you hate clutter and love the Walkathon, we have a tip you might like.
Just like last year, the Green Team is collecting your gently used (or new) goody bag toys; just drop them in the collection bin the school lobby, they will come back in their second life as a Walkathon prize!
Guidelines: good condition, small toys only please. NO STUFFIES! The bin will be in the lobby through Friday, October 25.
Many thanks,
Your Thornhill Green Team and Planet Earth

Fuel up for our fourth graders
Thornhill’s fourth grade class is holding a big bake sale/fundraiser at the school Walkathon on Saturday, November 2. All of the money we raise will help offset costs of the class’ annual field trip to the Coloma Outdoor Discovery School. This overnight field trip in California's Gold Country is an incredible and fun learning experience, but costs have gone up this year, and we want to keep it as affordable as possible for everyone.
We will have a ton of baked goodies for sale, so please make sure to stop by (cash only please) to fuel up before the Walkathon, buy snacks in between laps, and take some home for Sunday morning treats. We’ll be selling cookies, muffins, cakes and bread by the slice and in small batches, and we may also have for sale a few whole cakes and/or pies.

EWaste collection success!
Congratulations to all of the Thunderbirds who helped promote, contribute their time, and their household EWaste to this event! The majority of the folks who came by our EWaste fundraiser and sustainability event were from our larger community! How lovely to have a community with mindfulness regarding disposing junk - and a community who provided contributions to our school's sustainability needs!

About the Thornhill Newsletter
The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.
Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Evie Nagy, at newsletter@thornhillschool.org by 8 p.m. Thursday for approval—nothing sent after this will be included in the following week’s newsletter unless there are extremely compelling extenuating circumstances. It’s fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or Word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.
THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, VP of Communications Erin Proudfoot, PFC President Rex Crum, and Principal Steve Daubenspeck. Member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
