St. Luke Weekly Memo
February 15 - 22, 2018
First Sunday of Lent - February 18
Gospel Reading
Mark 1:12-15
Jesus is tempted in the desert by Satan.
Family Connection
The announcement that Jesus makes as he begins his preaching in Sunday’s Gospel is recalled on Ash Wednesday at the signing with ashes: “Repent and believe in the gospel.” This is our challenge for Lent; indeed, it is the challenge of our entire life. During Lent, we are invited to strengthen and to renew the promises that we made at our Baptism, to reject Satan and sin so as to live as children of God. Through the grace of God that we received at Baptism, we follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit and know that with Jesus’ help, we will be victorious over sin.
As you gather as a family, talk about the importance of Baptism. At our Baptism, our sins were forgiven, and we promised to live as children of God. As part of the Rite of Baptism, we rejected sin and Satan. Read Sunday’s Gospel, Mark 1:12-15. During Lent, we renew the promises of our Baptism, turning again from sin and promising to follow God. Light a candle, perhaps a candle used at one of your family member’s Baptisms, and pray together the Act of Contrition.

Sherwood Park Boundary Consultation
During this next phase of the Sherwood Park Boundary Consultation, we will be asking for input on the four options that have been selected by the EICS Board of Trustees as possible solutions to the population imbalance in Sherwood Park EICS schools. All of the options, background material is on our Sherwood Park Boundary Consultation webpage located in the Sherwood Park Boundary Page .
It's important that you take time to complete the Elk Island Catholic Sherwood Park School Consultation survey here to share your thoughts on the 4 options of reconfiguration as they gain feedback on the options presented. Please read the letter below which provides additional information from Parent Council.
Tobogganing at St. Luke
We are lucky at St. Luke School to have a wonderful hill for tobogganing in our backyard. Students will be learning the rules for tobogganing during their Physical Education classes. The Alberta Safety Guidelines for Physical Activity will be followed as well as some additional guidelines to ensure your child’s safety. Once your child has learned the safety guidelines and has shown that they will adhere to them, the hill will be opened for use at recess time. Students will be required to use the toboggans supplied by St. Luke. The yearly field trip consent form that you signed at the beginning of the year covers participation in this activity. Snowpants, coat, mitts and a hat are required for riders in grades K-4 and strongly suggested for all grades.
St. Luke students will demonstrate their skills and knowledge of safe tobogganing practices by:
Assessing the hill condition first to ensure it is not icy and that all obstacles, including jumps are removed
Keeping the runway clear of people by immediately getting out of the way after descending and moving to the designated path for ascending the hill
Waiting patiently in line at the top of the hill until the runway is cleared
Riding down on their own power without being pushed
Riding the toboggan in a seated or kneeling position (not standing or lying down)
Riding one (or two for longer toboggans) at a time unless otherwise instructed by a PE teacher
Controlling the descent speed and direction with feet or hands when necessary
Safely abandoning the toboggan if it veers toward an obstacle such as a tree or a person
Using school toboggans during school hours and sharing them in an orderly fashion. Once a riding student arrives back at the top of the hill, he or she gives the toboggan to the next person in line.
Donations for Apples
As you may know we have been providing apples for students to eat from a donor. We are no longer receiving fresh apples and are looking for apple donations or financial donations to purchase apples as they are a popular snack with students.
School Fees
All school fees are now due. You can go onto Parent Portel to arrange payment. Please contact Mrs. Rumley if you need assistance paying for your child's field trip fees, etc.
Mrs. Michaud
It is with mixed emotion that we share with you that Mrs. Robyn Michaud, our current Grade 2 and French teacher, will not be returning to St. Luke after her maternity leave ends this month to stay home with her beautiful daughter. Mrs. Michaud, her husband, Adrien, and their beautiful daughter, Nyxon, have moved to the Okanagan to be closer to family. We will miss her welcoming presence and enthusiastic spirit in the school. We wish her and her family all the best in their future endeavors.
