ACT - March 8, 2022
According to Wisconsin Statute, districts are required to assess high school students in 11th grade. The Department of Public Instruction (DPI) partnered with ACT to provide these assessments. Students in 11th grade will take the ACT on March 8th.
The ACT is a paper-pencil, multiple‐choice assessment in four areas: English, math, reading, and science, with an additional 40‐minute writing essay.
In order to create the most optimal testing environment for students, March 8th will be a “Juniors Only” day. High school students in grades 9, 10, and 12 will not attend classes on March 8th (all day).
The ACT administered on March 8th is identical to the one offered at various locations on Saturday mornings. Students will have the opportunity to have their scores sent to potential colleges that they might be interested in applying to. This opportunity typically has a cost associated with it but will be free to all of our 11th grade students.
The purpose of sending this communication is to ensure that all students are in attendance during the testing date, March 8th by 7:30am.
9th, 10th and 12th Grade Students and Families
All 9th, 10th and 12th grade students do NOT have school on March 8th, 2022. The 11th grade students will be taking the ACT and the building will be closed to all other students and the public in order to ensure a high quality testing environment.
11th Grade Students and Families
All 11th grade students will be taking the ACT at Beloit Memorial High School on March 8th. Students should report to the building between 7:30-7:45am. 11th graders are encouraged to leave their backpack and devices at home during testing. All devices and personal belongings that are brought to school will be stored in a secure location during testing. Students will be released as they finish the test, typically around 1:00pm.
During Testing on the 8th, BMHS will be closed to the public.

We follow the jazzy lounge singer, Deloris Van Cartier, as she witnesses a murder and has to go into protective custody. She is hidden at a convent where she has to pass as a nun until she can safely testify. Deloris struggles to fit in, but in the end, we find it is a match made in heaven.

10th & 11th Graders If you are interested in applying to be in a collegiate academy, please apply using this link. This is different from the career exploration pathways used for course selection. A collegiate academy is an advanced pathway that allows you to earn your way toward an associates degree while you are still in high school. A flyer and FAQ document is attached with additional information. If you have any questions after reading the below information, please contact Mrs. Snow or your regular counselor.
Requirements to qualify to be in a collegiate academy:
- Possess and maintain at least a 3.0 GPA
- Maintain excellent attendance (0 unexcused absences and 0 unexcused tardies)
As soon as you apply, your qualifications will be reviewed by a counselor. If you qualify, your counselor, yourself, and a parent/guardian will work together on your plan and apply for Start College Now. You must be signed up for Start College Now in order to take the college classes in your collegiate academy. Start College Now applications are due by March 1st.
If you don't meet the above requirements, you can still apply for Start College Now and other college credit programs. Please communicate with your counselor to make sure you don't miss important deadlines for any such programs you may be interested in.

Graduating Seniors - Scholarship and Post-Secondary Opportunities
Did you know your senior receives emails from Mrs. Wolf every time there is a new scholarship opportunity? Each year there are scholarships that no student applies to receive. Please encourage your student to regularly read the emails from Mrs. Wolf and to apply to any scholarships they are eligible to receive.
Current opportunities from local 2 and 4 year colleges
- Blackhawk Technical College has 3 grant-funded opportunities
The AIM Certificate program is a summer Accelerated Industrial Maintenance Certification program that covers 100% of the tuition and fees for a student and pays the student $13/hour to attend class and complete the program. Here is a link to more information.
Students interested in the Early Childhood Education program at Blackhawk and who have been impacted by the pandemic, may qualify for full tuition and fees plus a weekly stipend while they complete the program. To learn more about this opportunity, click here.
Are you looking for a program to help your student transition from high school to a college or career setting? Blackhawk Technical College’s Power Skills Program may be the answer! This short program will focus on Communication, Team Building, Adaptability and Leadership skills. There are 3 different sessions to choose from. Learn more here.
- Beloit College has the Midwest Flagship Match Scholarship. This means Wisconsin residents who have at least a 3.5 GPA will pay the same amount in tuition at Beloit College as they would at UW-Madison. Here is a link to more information about that scholarship.
- UW - Whitewater at Rock County (U-Rock) offers several options for beginning a 4-year degree in a smaller, economically efficient setting.
Did you know that students can earn a 4-year degree in either Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from UW-Platteville but all courses will actually occur at U-Rock?
For example, students can complete up to two years of coursework in business, education, or nursing/health care and be well prepared for transfer to UW-Whitewater or any other UW System school.
A link to these academic programs and to other information about U-Rock can be found here.
We are able to take groups of up to 12 students to tour the U-Rock campus, sit in on a class, and learn more about the opportunities (both academic and extracurricular) that are offered at U-Rock. Interested students should email Ms. Prowse at dprowse@sdb.k12.wi.us.
Earn and Learn through a registered apprenticeship program! Start working and getting paid while you learn a trade! Are you interested in a trade? Perhaps welding, construction, building roads, HVAC, working in other transportation sectors? A registered apprentice needs to be a hard worker, a good problem solver, and good team member. He or she should be willing and eager to learn new skills and apply the knowledge they have learned to new situations. Mrs. Prowse has information on Registered Apprenticeships through local associations. A registered apprentice earns a living wage while they learn a trade. In addition, in many cases, the apprentice also qualifies for health insurance and pension benefits from day one! For example, a Sheet Metal Worker Apprentice earns $42860, plus benefits, in their first year (working 2000 hours on the job during that year. In the 5th year an apprentice would earn $68560, plus benefits. Once the 5 year apprenticeship is complete, Journey-person status is reached and currently, that person would earn $85700 in wages and an additional $38620 in benefits. Learn more about registered apprenticeships by contacting Mrs. Prowse.
Current Juniors (Rising Seniors) - Leadership Opportunity
Invitation to Apply
The Rock County Leadership Development Academy is expanding their training opportunities to include ONE rising high school senior from each Rock County high school. Current juniors who may be interested in this opportunity can find more information here. This is a long term commitment which consists of one full-day training session each month from September through May, although there are two required dates in September. These sessions occur on Fridays, which means students will miss that day of school (absence will be excused), and if it is a non-school day, students will still be expected to attend. Candidates will need to provide their own transportation to the sessions and should also expect to spend 5-15 hours extra in some months working with their group on a community service project. The youth will work directly with a group of adult leaders from Rock County (who will go through a background check), offering each participant networking opportunities while being part of a project that will make a lasting, positive impact on our community. The dates of the sessions can be found here. Applications for this open on March 1, 2022 and close on March 30, 2022. Students must complete the application to be considered as a candidate. The pool of candidates who complete the application will be narrowed down to two per school. Those candidates will be invited to interview for this opportunity with the Leadership Development Academy. Please contact Mrs. Prowse with any questions you have after reading the attached information.
