Dear Parents and Members of the OLQHS Community
I cannot believe we have reached the end of this 2014-2015 school year. Where has the time gone? It seems like yesterday we were moving into the new building and Pre-K was not anywhere finished but somehow we made it. The new Middle School has been a great addition to our campus. It is wonderful to have the Pre-K, Kindergarten, 3rd and 4th grade on this side of the street. I feel that our students are very safe. Carline has gone better than I ever thought it would, thanks to all of our parents. I believe we are adjusting to our new staff and our new staff members are adjusting to OLQHS Community. The work will begin on the ECC very soon. I am anxious to get the project underway and complete.
The next school year will see some new faces and some faces in different places. Kelly DeMolle will be the new Middle School Coordinator, Meg Worsham will be the 5th grade ELA teacher, Amy Abshire will be the 6th grade ELA teacher, Nicole Posch will be a 2nd grade teacher and Blair Arceneaux will be a 3rd grade teacher. The special education department will be changed. Adrienne Link will be the Resource teacher for K – 4th grade with an aide. Susan Hoover will continue to be the Resource aide in the Middle School (5th – 8th). We will be hiring someone to take Kelly DeMolle’s place. OLQHS is still looking for an 8th grade ELA teacher, a 3rd grade teacher and an elementary special education aide. Hopefully God will lead the right person to our community.
OLQHS is an in creditable place to be!

A Summer Prayer
Long warm days...
The pace of life slows...
A time for picnics and rest in the shade...
Lord, help me to rest awhile
in the cooling shade of your presence.
Slow down my restless heart and fill me
with gentle compassion for all your people. Amen
This summer
In whatever you do
Wherever you go
Walking with God means…
Walking with honesty
And with courage,
Walking with love
And respect
And concern for the feelings of others
May you talk to God
This summer
And every day and
In every situation
Talking with God means…
Praying words of praise
For the beauty of creation
Saying prayers of thanks
For friends and good times,
Asking God’s help
In all your decisions
Expressing sorrow
When you have failed
May you talk with God
Every day. Amen.

OLQHS 2015 AUCTION Night
Thank you to everyone who supported our auction, whether through theme basket donations, item donations, volunteer time or purchasing tickets and items that night. We are so grateful for the support of the OLQHS community! Also, we would like to give a special thanks to Auction Chair, Beth Melancon and her volunteers and committee chairs. It was a great event and together we raised over $100,000 to support our school!
Thank you!!
Instant Wisdom
Here are 5 activities to do with your children this summer.
1. Grow the biggest zucchini in your neighborhood.
What better way to learn the basics of science and how things grow than to plant your own garden? You can start with seeds or small plants. Talk about what plants need to be hardy: air, water, sunlight and nutrients. Vegetables are especially fun and educational to plant because your child will learn where food comes from and will also get to eat the end product.
2. Clip, paste and write about your family adventures.
A family vacation is a perfect opportunity to create a trip scrapbook that will be a lasting souvenir of family adventures. Collect postcards, brochures and menus from restaurants and tourist attractions. Encourage your child to write descriptions of the places you visited and tell stories about your family's escapades. Or suggest a scrapbook on your child's favorite sports team or a chronicle of his year in school. The scrapbook might contain photos with captions, newspaper clippings or school mementos.
Many photo-sharing Web sites will help you (for a fee) create professional quality photo books, where you arrange the photos and write captions.
3. Get theatrical.
Young children can make their own puppet theater. Begin by cutting off the finger-ends of old gloves. Draw faces on these fingers with felt tip markers and glue on yarn for hair. Or glue on felt strips to create cat, dog or other animal faces. Then your child can create a story that the finger puppets can act out. For older children, find books containing play scripts for young people (see "Helpful Books" sidebar) and encourage your child and friends to create their own neighborhood theater. They can plan a performance, make a simple stage at the park or on the steps of someone's home, create playbills and sell tickets.
4. Make chocolate mousse or build a bird feeder.
Toy stores and craft shops are full of kits for making things, from bird feeders to model airplanes to mosaic tableaux. These projects teach children to read and follow directions, and offer the added benefit of creating a finished product. Science experiment books encourage children to observe and ask questions while providing hours of hands-on fun using scientific concepts.
What child wouldn't be inspired to bake cookies or make chocolate mousse? A cookbook geared for children is a good place to start. Ethnic cookbooks provide an excellent way to explore the food of other cultures, and open up conversations about how people do things differently in other parts of the world. Children are much more likely to eat something strange if they make it themselves.
5. Paint the picket fence, baby-sit or volunteer at a soup kitchen.
Even young children can learn to be responsible by helping to set the table, take care of a pet, clean out a closet, wash the car or paint the picket fence. Ask your child to be your energy consultant and help find ways to conserve energy in your house. Outside summer jobs and community service help children learn to be punctual, follow directions and serve others.
Caught You Being Good this week at OLQHS!! Let’s Celebrate!
Thank you to Jeremy Harvey who can fix anything. He fixed my old three hole paper punch. In addition, Jeremy fixed Mrs. Foshee’s pencil sharpeners.
Thank you Jeremy.
OLQHS 1st Graders Meet New Fluency Targets
Earlier this year, an analysis of the previous four years fluency data led us to the conclusion we needed to raise the target oral reading rates for our 1st graders. We measure the words correct per minute (WCPM) as well as comprehension and recall levels three times a year for all first and second graders.
The spring fluency target range was raised from 30-90 WCPM to 70-110 WCPM. The first graders were highly successful in meeting the raised standard. 50 out of the 54 students tested met the new standard. The previous mean/average for the years 2011-14 for the spring testing was 96 WCPM. This year’s group averaged 105 WCPM. 30 of the 50 students who met the new target scored higher than the mean score. Great job first grade students, teachers, and parents!
OLQHS Science Lab In Action!
7th Grade
The seventh graders are wrapping up this school year by studying several popular American Modernist authors. They are gaining an appreciation for classic authors such as Ernest Hemingway, Ezra Pound, F. Scott Fitzgerald, and William Faulkner. The students will also write an argumentative literary analysis on one of the works we have covered in class.

Live It! Step With It / Fit It In Health Challenge
Our Lady Queen of Heaven School students recently took the Live It! Step With It / Fit It In Health Challenge. In the Physical Education classes, the third, fourth and fifth grade boys and girls participated in the President’s Campaign for a healthier United States. Each student was given a Stepometer that counted each step taken daily in Physical Education class. A Personal Tracking chart was used by PE coaches, Doug Dietz and Kim LaRocca to record the number of active steps each day taken by the students. Each PE class set two daily goals:
1. Be physically active. Step With It!
2. Make healthy choices. FIT IT IN!
Each student averaged almost 2,000 ( 2,000 steps = 1 mile ) steps per class time with many students reaching over 3,000 and some 4,000 steps per class.

Summer Food Service Program
The Healthy, Hunger-Free Act of 2010, Public Law 111-296 establishes requirements for conducting outreach to households on the availability of the Summer Food Service Program meals. Eligibility is any child 18 years of age or younger or any person over 18 who has been determined by a state education agency or local public educational agency of a state to be mentally or physically handicapped and is enrolled in a public or private nonprofit school program. The schedule for free meals for students who qualify can be found in Calcasieu Parish at cityoflakecharles.com and Calcasieu Parish Police Jury website.
OLQHS is a Cell Phone Free Zone
Please when driving through carline; remember that school zones are cell phone free zones. The crossing guards as well as duty teachers have noticed that there are quite a few people who are on their cell phones while picking up their children. When the Louisiana legislature voted the cell phone free zones into law, I am sure they were concerned with the safety of the children of Louisiana.
ASBESTOS STATEMENT
EACH YEAR PARENTS MUST BE INFORMED THAT THE SCHOOL HAS COMPLIED WITH ALL NATIONAL STANDARDS REGARDING ASBESTOS ON CAMPUS. CERTAIN VINYL FLOORS AND THE PANELS THAT ARE BELOW THE QUAD WINDOWS WILL HAVE TO BE HANDLED APPROPRIATELY IF EVER REPLACED. OUR REPORT INDICATES THAT EXISTING ASBESTOS IS IN GOOD CONDITION AND WE HAVE THE HIGHEST RATING GIVEN. YOU ARE WELCOME TO EXAMINE THE ASBESTOS FILE IN THE OFFICE IF DESIRED.

The Art World
We have quite a few new Hall of Famers in Artsonia this month! Several first graders, Cayden Dupuis, Madelyn Cormier-McCann, and Colin Tanner are now in the Artsonia Hall of Fame. In second grade, Ella Grace Morton, and in third grade, Aubrie Lyons, Gabe LeDoux, and Cooper Mabile are in the Hall of Fame. The new Hall of Famer in fourth grade is Isabella Lundy, as well as two fifth graders, Seth Mabile and Alyssa Morton. Our only new member of the Hall of Fame in eighth grade is Thomas Lundy.
We are all finishing the year with a bang. Kindergarten through second grade is doing “pirate” things in honor of Contraband Days. Third graders are finishing their gourd flowers for Mother’s Day. Fourth graders are finishing their Picasso Portraits, and they are fabulous. Fifth graders are madly finishing their Indian gourd masks. The seventh and eighth grade Art Enrichment classes are finishing their self portraits on the wonderful Wacom tablets that were purchased two years ago with a grant. The pictures are looking good!
Remember to comment on your child’s wonderful artwork and perhaps even purchase some Artsonia merchandise on which you will see your child’s artwork. They have a new product—a puzzle. The Fine Arts Department gets 20% of every sale and the funds are wisely used to greatly enhance your child’s creative experience.
We have had a great year creating, making messes, and having fun!
Have a fabulous summer,
Brenda Foshee, Art
