EAGLES SOAR NEWSLETTER
W. Charles Akins ECHS
First 9 Weeks
I hope you are all safe and well and in the best of health!
It has been a joy to have our students back in the building. We have been excited to have students back in our hallways and classrooms with the energy and enthusiasm for learning. It is our mission to help every student feel welcome, feel connected, and to feel they are an important part of the Akins ECHS family. We strive to challenge our students to grow academically, socially, and emotionally and our teachers work hard in their professional learning communities to create and develop lessons to help all of our students grow and improve.
With that said I would like to tell you about the issues we have had with a recent Tik Tok Challenge. Tik Tok is a social media platform that many people utilize. This challenge calls for students to vandalize their school bathrooms. This particular challenge requests students vandalize the school and post it to Tik Tok #deviouslicks. Every single student bathroom here at Akins has been defaced: pulling soap dispensers off the wall, pulling towel dispensers off the wall, breaking lights in the bathroom, pulling the fire alarm off the wall in the bathroom, filling up the toilet with objects and trying to flush it down the toilet, squirting a red substance all over our toilets, kicking the toilet off the base, and drawing/writing on the bathroom walls with spray paint. All of this for Tik Tok. Please speak with your student about how the bathrooms here at Akins are for all of us and keeping them clean and in working order is for all our community. This kind of vandalism affects us all. If your student has any information to report about this please have them email me or come to the main office. Tina.email@example.com
I am honored to serve you all as principal of Akins ECHS. It is truly a privilege to be a part of the Akins Community where parents, teachers, and students care for each other and strive to build positive relationships.
Parents and families,
We currently have students who are 5-10 minutes late to classes every period. This is key missed instructional time. We gave students time (except tardy sweeps-which we started 2 weeks ago) to get to know the campus and find their classes. Now as we enter the 8th week of school we are reinforcing the Tardy policy. The Tardy policy begins Wednesday 10/6/21.
Students who are tardy 1st and 5th period will report to room 157 to receive a pass back to class.
Students who are tardy 2nd period through 4th period and 6th period through 8th period will report to the attendance window for a pass.
Three tardies equals one Saturday School.

Compulsory Attendance Law
State law requires children to attend school each day that instruction is provided.
The law applies to children ages 6–19.
In addition to the Compulsory Attendance Law, there is the the 90% law. In order to receive credit for a final grade for a class, a student is required to attend class 90 percent of the days a class is offered regardless of whether the student’s absences are excused [see FEA] or unexcused. Atty. Gen. Op. JC-0398 (2001). If the student does not meet this requirement, the student must go through the Attendance Recovery Process.
If the student drops below 90% but attends class at least at 75% of the days the class is offered, the student may earn credit for the class by completing a plan approved by your assistant principal.
Submission of the attendance appeal must occur within 30 school days of the end of the semester in which the credit was denied. The campus attendance committee then meets and renders a decision based on the circumstances as presented by the student and parent within 30 school days of the end of the semester in which the credit was denied. See Austin ISD Board Policies FEC (LEGAL) and FEC (LOCAL).
Credit Loss Defined
When students do not meet the 90% attendance rate in a class, it is reflected on their report cards as course credit denial. Please see your Assistant Principal for assistance with this.
Homework Haven (tutoring and attendance recovery process)
Students can receive tutoring and make up attendance hours in Homework Haven.
