With the month of February wrapping up, I wanted to take this time to applaud our students' hard work throughout the cold winter season. Spring Break is here, and I hope that everyone has a fun and safe time away from the classroom.
I would also like to invite all of the parents and guardians in the School District of New Richmond to attend the upcoming Coffee and Conversation event. Each month we highlight a grade level, department or group that strives to share our District's story with the community.
NRHS Ice Fest
This month we have chosen to highlight the NRHS Ice Fest held on February 13-18, 2023.
The annual NRHS Ice Fest was one to remember! Throughout the week, the high school students and faculty participated in a variety of events as well as themed dress up days. During Team Day, groups of students and faculty went head to head in a snowy tug-of-war, snow sculpting, and many more winter activities. On Friday, February 17, the pep rally was held in the gym, where many performances took place including a dance performance, cheers from each grade level, a game of musical chairs, a potato race, a fashion show and much more! Thank you to the many students and staff that participated in a week stuffed with events!
NRMS Read-A-Thon
This month we have chosen to highlight the Read-A-Thon Event held at NRMS.
This month a Read-A-Thon was hosted at the New Richmond Middle School. This event drew in 60 middle school students and 8 teachers. Students and teachers spent Friday evening, February 10, together reading and eating pizza! Throughout the evening, students not only got to read, but they also had the opportunity to color and design their own bookmarks. Students and teachers alike loved the reading experience! Over the course of the evening, 10,403 pages were read by the 68 participants. Great job reading, Tigers!
Hillside 1st Grade Classes
Hillside 1st grade elementary students completed a non-fiction unit. Throughout the unit, students learned the difference between fiction and non-fiction books, and also got to write their own non-fiction book. Some of the most enjoyable moments were when they were learning and reading from National Geographic books. Many students wrote non-fiction stories about animals and how to take care of them. Other popular topics included athletics and school. In order for students to learn the facts needed to write their non-fiction books, they were taught how to use the website "Epic!" which helped them read non-fiction topics of their interest. Learning more about their chosen topic helped students write accurate and entertaining books. Students enjoyed the unit and found a love for reading and writing, specifically in the non-fiction category.
Paperjack 2nd Grade Classes
Paperjack elementary 2nd grade students were able to experience stories through "night vision." The second grade students have a love of reading! They enjoy opportunities and look forward to finding fun, new ways to practice their skills. One of their favorite activities is Flashlight Reading, where students work together, read aloud to friends, and share new stories. Reading with flashlights is a fun and exciting activity where students get to experience reading in an adventurous way! By creating fun ways for children to practice their reading skills, students are able to enjoy themselves, and the teachers enjoy it too! These lifelong learners are building their skills while also building memories at the same time.
Starr Kindergarten Classes
It’s hard to believe, but the 100th day of school finally arrived! This is a significant milestone for our kindergartners that deserves to be celebrated. Just a few short months ago, these students entered a new place that was big and unfamiliar. Together they learned how to navigate their new school. The cafeteria and playground were some of the first places they wanted to explore. On top of learning where everything was, the students got a chance to meet all the wonderful staff that make our school a safe, clean, and a happy place to be. Back in the classroom, the kindergartners learned each other's names, and things that their classmates love. While making connections with their new friends, they were also busy learning their letters and numbers. The growth that these kindergartners have made from day 1 to day 100 is absolutely incredible! They are now published authors and illustrators, scientists, and they even have special reading powers like pointer power and word part power. It also wouldn’t be kindergarten without having some fun along the way. Making applesauce, marching in a Halloween parade, and having a Polar Express party are memories that will last a lifetime. We are so proud of our shining stars!
