Hedda on Mr. Rogers
-When she wanted to join him in children's television, he suggested a master's degree in child development, not television or mass communication...
-He saw television moving toward green and he wanted to be part of the gift
-He wrote all 900 scripts, all 200 songs, did voices and movements for all puppets, hosted the show
-The question is not what can we give children on the screen (or anywhere)....it's what do they bring and how can we tap into that? (Who are they? What makes them laugh? What makes them worried? What helps them feel safe?) He realized if you wanted to communicate, the most important thing is to listen.....to keep your ears, eyes, and heart tuned to what is it this child needs, what is this child really saying?
-She watched him take all of the child development theory he learned and play it out on his show
- the importance of ritual (started and ended show same way each day (think morning meeting)
- transitions (carefully explained what was coming next, sweater/sneakers gave time for kids to settle in
- only brought one thing so you could focus only on that
- helped children with fear of aggression, what do you do with the mad that you feel, separation anxiety, reality vs fantasy (neighborhood of make believe completely separate part of program) ex: making cookies
- gave same kids of things he was learning about in child development grad school - where most people just thought, "what a nice program, he's a nice man" - he was very purposeful (also had master's in divinity and took pastoral counseling courses which are evident in his work) - also ordained minister with special charge of serving through television
-He offered a "television relationship" and established trust saying "Ok today we are going to (fill in the blank). I will take you by the hand. Come along...
TV Guide said "Where Mr. Rogers is, so is sanctuary" - that means safe place - there is trust in helping you know what's next, the predictability, the comfort level that this provides a child
-We create that safe place through the environment and how that is set up, through our interactions, and a place to talk about feelings. Fred said "Whatever is mentionable can be more manageable - whatever is human, we can talk about" ex: dead fish
-Let's give children the emotional vocabulary to be able to say they are sad or mad - that is going to help us through all of these situations that we have to deal with in life
-came from a boy who actually asked that question "What do you do when you get so mad you could bite?"
-for younger children, it's typical to give them some physical outlets, more outdoor time, more free running, and free movement to get rid of some of this "stuff" - the tension that builds up in anger
-Fred said this statement made him realize how intense kids' anger can be
-the last part of the song says "it's great to be able to STOP when you've planned a thing that's wrong and do something else instead"
-In video at end of the song, he is holding a piece of wood, looking like he is ready to throw it and says "sometimes when you feel like you are about to do something you know is wrong and you hold yourself back, and you don't do it, you know you're really growing then" - we should praise and applaud self control
- He said that parents and teachers need to understand that limits are a part of loving - that's what helps a child feel safe - that is saying "I will help you with your feelings"
-Hedda (inspired by her mentor Alice Honig) said that children need a place in the room that is a calming down place - it's not a punishment, but to say to a child "when you feel yourself getting worked up, recognize that feeling inside and that's a good place for you to calm down" - Alice says let the children help you design the space
Ella Jenkins
-Mr. Rogers was child-like, not childish, always tried to see everything from child's point of view
-he said there were lessons for all of us from our own childhood that can help us understand children
-he was not able to keep up with Ella, but he never gave up and he didn't ask for a retake or an easier song, after the take he said "that was hard"
-as adults we all have experiences that are hard or frustrating (trying to figure out a new cell phone) - we feel flustered, we feel stupid - we can remember how hard it is to learn new things and that you make mistakes at first - if we can understand those things in ourselves, we can understand them in children and it makes it easier to be there for them when they need us - that's scaffolding that comes from empathy (How can I help you with this?) - that's the kind of help WE want from somebody (think CANVAS), why wouldn't we do that for children
-What does it mean to really connect with a child? Say their name in the conversation and say it correctly! You know how it feels when someone includes your name - it somehow says "I see you" - Line from "The Last Confederate Widow Tells All" says "Notice is like oxygen" - when you can walk up to a child and say "I noticed....." it's like oxygen
-When asked why he doesn't spend more time teaching letters and numbers, etc., Mr. Rogers said he would like to give children the "tools" of learning. There are things like curiosity, wondering, trying to figure things out, problem solving, getting along with others, being able to talk about your feelings, the ability to calm yourself down, show self-control, cooperate with others, to listen, focus your attention. Those are the kinds of things we need to notice and promote through play and other activities. Then if we give kids the tools of learning, they will be more likely to learn the facts and they will be more motivated to learn the facts, but more importantly, they will use the facts to build and not destroy"-The show is timeless - it is about the human condition
-Fred said "The outsides of children may have changed, but not their insides"
Hedda Sharapan on Creativity
- "You never know where the seeds of children's play will take them....the things we play about as children sometimes amazingly finds their way into our work lives" (she had her own television show in front of the mirror when she was 12)
- Connection between curiosity and learning
- Hippocampus is activated/Dopamine floods in = no better environment for learning
- Creativity is the best predictor of achievement - studies show it correlates 3X higher than IQ - yet creativity is declining (tests that look for one "right" answer, mindless screen time- must make screen time creative)
- What boosts creativity? Stuff (think Makerspace), Questions (Mr. Rogers said our questions are more important than our answers), and adults who care
- What if we taught students to use "I Wonder" every single day? How are you empowering curiosity?
- Caring adults are the glue that make creative learning possible
"I bet Mr. Rogers would like makerspaces" ~ quote from the conference

Notes
- Why flip? Gives more time to be the "naked teacher"
- Read "Flip Your Classroom" by Aaron Sams and Jonothan Burgman
- Homework is when they need the teacher most, they can get content on their own
- In class is when you can spend the time on socratic seminars, Padlet, experiments, board games, etc.
- Platform to make/edit videos, works with Canvas (filters override it)
- Voice over PowerPoints
- Rule of thumb- minutes of video should equal student's age
- Use school user name/password to make it easier
- Use for staff PD to make sure they watch it
- Zaption more interactive than EdPuzzle - both fremium
- EdPuzzle can have a class
- In EdPuzzle, "Assign" lets you know which student it is, "Share" is anonymous
- Options: prevent skipping, due date, availability date (staff PD), or set the due date in Canvas, "Share" gives link (for Google) or embed code (for Canvas)
- Use HTML Editor in Cavas for embed code
- Color coded stats based on if video was watched, completed, etc.
- Reports on Questions/Answers, export data, comment on answers
- More stats available in Zaption
- data on how many times video is viewed (where students may have had trouble), if any parts are skipped
- Trim beginning/end of video
- Record audio over video if you have bad audio or record over someone else's video or in another language
- Add formative assessment - multiple choice, open ended, content info (extension or resources)
- Feedback for when they have finished (Thanks....) or feedback on Qs
- Download videos as MP4, store in Canvas, for students with no internet with Keepvid.com, works for music too
- Web cam optional, enable microphone
- Video Recording software - Screen-Cast-O-Matic - free but leaves watermark $15/year or Camtasia $100
- You don't always have to be the one presenting, have a "guest speaker" - example: videos from Khan Academy
