February is Black History MonthEach week we will be highlighting individuals who have lived lives of inspiration and we will celebrate their contributions, discoveries and creations. These individuals have ignited hope and inspired change - we honor them not just in February but all year long! This week we'll learn about two amazing Scientist whose work made history, and makes our lives easier everyday! | Katherine Johnson - Mathematician and ScientistKatherine Johnson was born in West Virginia in 1918. She loved math from an early age and her curiosity and hard work helped her to excel in school so that she was able to graduate from college at age eighteen! Early in her career, she was called a “computer.” Her math calculations were key to making the first American astronaut's orbit around the Earth a success - and then she helped put a man on the moon! Katherine earned a reputation for mastering complex manual calculations and helped pioneer the use of computers to perform the tasks. The space agency noted her historical role as "one of the first African-American women to work as a NASA scientist". In 2015, then-President Barack Obama presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She was cited as a pioneering example of African-American women in STEM. Katherine's story was also made into a Hollywood movie in 2016 called Hidden Figures. President Obama said, "Katherine G. Johnson refused to be limited by society's expectations of her gender and race while expanding the boundaries of humanity's reach." Quotes from Katherine Johnson: "Like what you do, and then you will do your best." "I like to learn. That's an art and a science." | Mark Dean - Inventor and Computer ScientistDean was born in 1957 in Tennessee. Dean is credited with helping to launch the personal computer age with work that made the machines more accessible and powerful. Dean is one of the top engineering minds at the International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation. He made his first mark in the industry in the early 1980s, when he and a colleague developed a system that allowed computers to communicate with printers and other devices. Every time you print something, you can thank Dean. In all, Dean holds 20 patents, and was honored as one of the "50 Most Important African Americans in Technology" by the California African-American Museum in 2000. Dean wants to help increase awareness of the contributions of Black engineers to both the engineering industry and the African-American community. Quotes from Mark E. Dean: "A lot of kids growing up today aren't told that you can be whatever you want to be, there may be obstacles, but there are no limits." |
