A Message from Mr. Markham Principal, Buckhorn High
Welcome back everyone. I am so glad to have the students and teachers back in the building. I can remember a time in my teaching career when I was glad when summer rolled around. Now, as an administrator, I’m glad when the kids come back. I get bored during the summer. It’s not because I don’t have plenty to do. I stay pretty busy during the summer, interviewing and hiring new staff, attending professional development events, overseeing maintenance projects in and around the building, attending summer athletic events, and preparing for the upcoming year. But those things just aren’t as much fun without the kids here. When the students are present, there’s always something going on. With each new year, there are ball games and activities to look forward to. I remarked to the faculty at our Institute day last week that I believe being around the kids helps keep us young. Unfortunately, some of us have been teaching so long that it isn’t keeping us as young as we’d like anymore.
As another new school year gets underway, BHS continues to grow. We enter our first year of competition in the new 7A classification. We have several new teachers and coaches; there’s a new routine with our buses, and we start and end the school day later. We will also welcome a new superintendent in January. All these changes offer the opportunity for growth and progress. We are experiencing some growing pains, but we have outstanding students and a great community. We will do as we have always done at Buckhorn: excel. I look forward to working with you all this year. Again, welcome back and …GO BUCKS!
Thank You for Your Patience
In March of this year, based on the community survey results, the Madison County School Board approved a staggered start/stop schedule that reduced the number of students on each bus and will eventually reduce the commute time by half.
Please bear with us over the next few weeks as our district coordinators continue to modify the bus routes and schedules, as needed. Our director of auxiliary services, Dan Evans, and his staff are reviewing the routes and traffic patterns each day, and will continue to make the necessary adjustments needed for improvements. In a recent Huntsville Times article, Mr. Evans explained, "It's going to take some time to work it all out. It's one of those things you can't practice. It has to be live and it takes a little while."
We realize it may have created a hardship on our parents, our staff, and other community members. However, our number one priority is the safety of our students. We understand that these delays may be an inconvenience, so we are extremely grateful for your patience and understanding during this transition period.
A Few Reminders About Madison County Board of Education's Rules & Regulations
ATTENDANCE POLICY
Absence from School
Code of Alabama (1975) § 16-28-15
Every parent or custodian of any child required to attend school, shall, within three school days, explain the cause of any absence of the child. Failure to furnish explanation shall be admissible as evidence of the child being truant. A good cause or valid excuse explanation is outlined below:
Excused Absence
1X – Personal Illness
High School Students - A maximum of four (4) absences per semester shall be coded as an excused absence when a valid excuse is provided by the parent or custodian.
2X - Doctor, dental, or other medical excuse for the child
3X - Death in the immediate family (Parents, Grandparents, and Siblings) - A maximum of two (2) excused days or three (3) if the memorial service is beyond a radius of 100 miles from the local school.
4X – Inclement weather, which would be dangerous to the life and health of the child as determined by the principal. According to MCBOE approved guidelines.
5X - Legal - required court appearance as ordered by subpoena or other court document.
6X - Prior permission of the principal upon request of the parent or custodian. According to MCBOE approved guidelines.
7X – Legal quarantine – Medical documentation required.
Unexcused Absence
8X – Any absence for which a valid written explanation is not provided within three (3) school days shall be coded as unexcused. Any absence beyond the fourth per semester for high school, shall be unexcused unless the written explanation meets an excused absence category. Any student having an unexcused absence will be considered truant as defined by the Alabama Administrative Code, Chapter 290-3-1-.02(7) (c). [Madison County Board of Education 2014-2015 Code of Conduct pages 20 & 21 of 32 (Approved July 10, 2014)].
Please contact our attendance office personnel if you have any questions or concerns.
Mrs. Tina Hill and/or Mrs. Sherry Ricketts
MOMENT OF SILENCE
To comply with State of Alabama legislation, the Principals of each school will establish procedures so that at the beginning of each school day each teacher in charge of a group of students will conduct a brief period of quiet reflection for not more than 60 seconds with the participation of every student in the classroom. A brief period of quiet reflection for 60 seconds will also be held at the beginning of every school athletic event and graduation ceremony. These activities are not intended to be and shall not be conducted as a religious service or exercise, but shall be considered an opportunity for a moment of silent reflection on the anticipated activities of the day. [Madison County Board of Education 2014-2015 Code of Conduct page 5 of 32 (Approved July 10, 2014)].
MEDIA COVERAGE OF SCHOOL EVENTS
Occasionally local news media visit schools in Madison County to do special reports or follow up on certain news events. As a part of their coverage they often film certain aspects of the school. It is the principal’s decision whether to allow news media to come into the schools and cover certain events. Extra precautions are taken when the media is covering a sensitive topic or event that might have a negative impact on the school, staff and students. Parents who have concerns about their child possibly being filmed or photographed by the media should contact the principal. Principals will make every effort to accommodate the wishes of the parent, but it should be understood that it is very difficult to foresee every possible situation that might occur from media coverage of the schools and school events. [Madison County Board of Education 2014-2015 Code of Conduct page 5 of 32 (Approved July 10, 2014)].
NOTICE TO PARENTS
Parents, or individuals acting in that capacity, are responsible for seeing that each student under his/her care and control follows school system policy and local school rules and regulations. It is also the responsibility of parents to know such policies, rules and regulations.
Each BHS student was given a MCBOE Code of Conduct during homeroom on Tuesday, August 5, 2014. If your child did not provide you with the copy he/she received, we have provided the link to access the 2014-15 MCBOE Code of Conduct online. Please set aside the necessary time to familiarize yourself with our system's rules and regulations. There have been several changes this year, approved by the Madison County Board of Education on July 10, 2014.
Please print the Notice of Receipt (page 32), complete, sign, and return to your child's FIRST BLOCK TEACHER, to be kept on file for the duration of the school year.
You may access the complete 2014-15 Code of Conduct through this link:

Zack Branner - Georgia State Bound
By Drew Champlin | dchamplin@al.com
BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Zachary Branner committed to Georgia State while on an unofficial visit to the Atlanta campus today. The 6-foot-5, 328-pound offensive lineman from Buckhorn caught the eye of Georgia State coaches when he visited the campus with his father in early June for a camp they were holding with Penn State coaches as guest coaches. GSU offered Branner after his camp performance and he built a solid relationship with head coach Trent Miles and offensive line coach Harold Etheridge.
On Monday, Branner brought his mother and sisters to visit the campus."I didn't think I was going to commit today," Branner said. "As the day went on, it just grew on me and grew on me. Eventually, I fell in love with it and wanted to commit." Georgia State struggled last year in its first FBS season, going 0-12, but the Panthers are only in their fifth year of existence. Miles is in his second year as the program is now a full member of the Sun Belt Conference. "They're going nowhere but up and it's a new program," Branner said. "They've only had the program for five years. I can have a huge impact coming in. I want to be able to start a tradition and make a good tradition for the future."
Branner said he could play all five positions on the offensive line and felt pretty strong about his commitment. He went to eight or nine camps, he said, and held early offers from Western Kentucky, Alabama State and Kentucky Christian. "Middle Tennessee, Southern Miss and a couple more Conference USA schools were showing me interest and wanted to keep recruiting me throughout the season, but I felt like today that Georgia State was going to be my future home," Branner said.
He's a big part of a Bucks program under second-year head coach David O'Connor. The Bucks make the transition to Class 7A, Region 4 this year. "They will not have a harder worker on their team," O'Connor said. "He's a great football player and a better kid. If we had five of him, we'd be pushing everybody across the state. "It's hard for me to believe that the Alabamas and Auburns were not after him. It's a great fit for him because Georgia State's still in the infancy stages of their program and I really believe he's going to help take them to the next level."
Branner's commitment was certainly celebrated, albeit indirectly, by Panther coaches.

Logan Markham, One of Five Breakout Players in the Tennessee Valley!
By Josh Bean and Daniel Boyette | AL.com
August 01, 2014 8:39 a.m.
Excerpt from the al.com article:
"One of the most intriguing story lines entering every football season involves a simple question: Who will emerge as a star? It happens every season. Graduation leaves holes to fill. New players assume prominent roles and become team leaders. Who could be the breakout star of 2014?"
...
Logan Markham, Buckhorn, TE: "At 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds, he’s built like a traditional tight end. He caught 13 passes and three touchdowns last year, and he’s equally capable as a blocker and a receiver. He definitely has the potential to be a big part of the Bucks’ offense in 2014."

Class of 2016 Magazine Sales
BHS Band Apparel Fundraiser
The band has just started an apparel fundraiser. They’ve got a great selection this year, with high quality items at good prices (including a couple youth size options and female vs. male polos).
The sale ends August 20th, you should expect to receive the items by the end of the second week of September.
Just get with any one of our band students and they should be able to take your order, if they haven’t already asked you. There are some great items that are perfect for showing your school spirit at athletic events (and being comfortable – like with the Buckhorn stadium chair)!
Thank you so much for your support!
