Conscious Discipline

Our Conscious Discipline consultant met with us this week. She spent her time brainstorming with us on how to rewire a particular student of ours. Nick, Mark, Eddie, and I were in the meeting (which also included a DJO and parent), and I'd love to share some highlights with you this week sometime.

Last time Jill was here she gave her mini-lesson on the brain to teachers and approximately half our students. Again, we were reminded that while the nature of our work embeds the 12 executive functioning skills, we WILL rewire brains and see the design of our school pay off when we can add a component of intentionally teaching the 12 skills.

Also, I also have a subscription to trauma trainings this year. I shared the Norris notes version of some of them in my summer newsletters. If you'd like to rewatch them yourself, I can get you that information.

Other info about CD:

What is Conscious Discipline?
  • Conscious Discipline is the core of the programming at Ridgeview from the focus room and beyond.
  • Conscious Discipline® is a comprehensive social-emotional curriculum. It is based on current brain research, child development information, and developmentally appropriate practices.
  • Conscious Discipline® is a way or organizing schools and classrooms around the concept of a School Family. Each member of the family—both adult and child—learns the skills needed to successfully manage life tasks such as learning, forming relationships, communicating effectively, being sensitive to others’ needs and getting along with others.
  • Conscious Discipline® empowers teachers and other adults with the Seven Powers for Self Control. These powers change the adults’ perception and relationship with conflict, empowering them to be proactive instead of reactive during conflict times.
  • From the beliefs instilled with the Seven Powers for Self Control emerge the Seven Basic Skills of Discipline. These skills change how adults respond to conflict in such a way as to facilitate the development of the frontal lobes in children. The Seven Skills are the only skills an adult needs to constructively transform conflict into teaching moments.
  • We cannot teach behaviors and skills that we do not possess ourselves. Dr. Becky Bailey, the author of Conscious Discipline®, originally designed the program for classrooms, but the Brain Smart strategies imparted by the Seven Powers for Self Control and the Seven Basic Skills of Discipline are seamlessly applied to all human interactions.

One CD Component: Wish You Well

I'd love to take a spin off this and start this at least with our staff if not our whole school. Would be even better if a kid was interested in this and could make us something for it. You can find this in the front office at Ridgeview (student pictures). Let me know what you think!

Small Mall is Coming

Small Mall Collection Idea #8:

Grab your family, load up in the family truckster, give them a budget, and tell them we are shopping for the LA small mall! Put it all on Art's credit card.

An electronic flyer is below. Please help us out by sharing!
