A few words from Mr. Jelks...
Dear LIS Families,
I hope this message finds you well. I wanted to take a moment to express my appreciation for your ongoing support and involvement in our school community.
This week has been short but packed with activity and meaningful engagement. Our Anti-Biased Film Festival has been a resounding success, with students actively participating in thought-provoking conversations. It's inspiring to see our young learners initiate discussions about important topics related to bias and diversity.
Additionally, as we continue to celebrate Black History Month, our students have been delving into the lives and legacies of remarkable individuals such as Carter G. Woodson, Viola Desmond, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and Harriet Tubman. Their enthusiasm and dedication to learning about these influential figures have been truly commendable.
I'd like to extend a special acknowledgment to all the students who participated in the elementary Black History Month reading initiative. Your commitment to expanding your knowledge and understanding of Black history is commendable and sets a wonderful example for your peers.
Furthermore, I want to take this opportunity to recognize Debbie Hall for her years of dedicated service as an Educational Assistant for LIS. Debbie has been an invaluable member of our team, providing unwavering support and care to our students. As she embarks on this new chapter in her life, let's extend our heartfelt gratitude and best wishes for a fulfilling retirement.
As we conclude this week, let's carry forward the spirit of curiosity, empathy, and inclusivity that our students have demonstrated. Together, we can continue to foster a learning environment where every voice is valued and celebrated.
Thank you once again for your continued partnership in your child's education.

Chinese Lunar New Year
The Chinese Lunar New Year is an important celebration full of traditions that bring families together. Before the big day, families clean their homes to sweep away any bad luck from the past year. They gather for a special dinner where they enjoy dishes that symbolize prosperity and good fortune, like fish and dumplings.
Fireworks light up the night sky, and red lanterns decorate the streets, bringing luck and happiness to all who see them. People exchange red envelopes filled with money to wish each other a prosperous year ahead. The Lunar New Year is a time for families to bond, reflect on the past, and look forward to the future with hope and joy as they welcome in the Year of the Dragon. Please take a peek at the video to learn more.
Anti-Biased Film Festival
The fifth installment of our Anti-Bias Film Festival is "Rising" In the immediate aftermath of a massive storm, this film challenges viewers to consider why it takes a disaster to bring us together, paying tribute to real moments when people from different backgrounds have come together following natural disasters.

Attendance
We ask parents/guardians to call the school before 9:00 am at (250) 245-3351 or email Info.LI@sd68.bc.ca to notify the school of your child’s absence. Please follow up with a note to your child’s teacher when your child returns to school so the teacher can address any missed work, homework issues, etc. Also a reminder that if students need to leave early, they should be signed out in the main office.
School Closure
The following is a reminder about the NLPS school closure procedure for students.
If schools are closed due to snow, or any other weather-related problems, announcements will be made on local radio stations (WOLF 106.9 FM, WAVE 102.3 FM, and 91.7 COAST FM) by 7 a.m., or earlier, on the day of the closure. Please do not call the radio station – tune in and listen for the announcements, which will be made on a regular basis.
In addition, the district will post the information on the district’s website, Twitter, Facebook, and mobile app. Families may also receive a message through the School Messenger notification system via phone, email, or text. Please keep in mind, however, that there may be situations where this is not always possible, for example, power outages or technical problems. The most reliable method is to listen to the local radio stations.
