Sore throat is a common problem during childhood and is usually the result of a bacterial or viral infection. Although sore throat usually resolves without complications, it sometimes requires treatment with an antibiotic (in the case of Strep throat). Post-nasal Drip - Drainage from a sinus infection can cause a sore throat. The throat clearing that goes with the drainage may cause most of the irritation. The sinus infection is more likely to be viral than bacterial (Interesting).
Signs & Symptoms of a Sore Throat: Pain or discomfort of the throat,
made worse when swallows, fever, swollen glands in the neck, scratchiness in the throat, redness in the back of the mouth and bad breath.
What Can I Do About a Sore Throat?
sip warm liquids - water, herbal tea with honey, or diluted apple juice
eat cold or frozen liquids (such as ice pops)
gargle with saltwater - children over age 6 who are able to gargle without swallowing, mix ½ teaspoon of table salt in 8 ounces of warm water. Have them swish and gargle the mixture 2 to 3 times a day for the next few days. Do not let your child swallow the salt water; have them spit it out.
suck on hard candy or throat lozenges (for kids age 4 or older)
Get Medical Care if Your Child: Sore throat that lasts longer than a few days, has trouble swallowing, pus in the back of the throat.
It’s hard to believe that it’s March and Spring is right around the corner! We are still having a lot of chilly days and it can be hard to be stuck in the house. One calming strategy I wanted to share is a mindful activity where you think about your 5 senses.
- 5 objects they can see right now.
- 4 objects they can feel or touch right now.
- 3 things they can hear right now.
- 2 things they can smell right now.
- 1 thing they can taste right now.
This activity can help to keep you present and get back to calm.
Thank you for your support!
