Salk Seahawk Scoop
Week of 2/19/2023
A Note from the Principal
Salk has been approved to have a therapy dog visit. Charlie, the English Creme Golden Retriever, will be visiting once a week starting in March. Not only is Charlie a certified therapy dog, but he is one of my family dogs and I am so excited he will be joining the Salk family. Studies have shown that therapy dogs, have the ability to increase positive emotions, promote engagement in learning activities and positive attitudes toward learning, reduce negative behaviors, as well as encourage prosocial behaviors including acting as a social catalyst to facilitate social interactions with others.
Charlie a certified therapy dog after completing his training and testing by The Alliance of Therapy Dogs. He has also earned the title of AKC Canine Good Citizen. I am also a certified therapy dog handler after completing my testing and observations by The Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
Charlie's purpose is to ease student's anxieties and increase positive emotions. We do not want his presence to cause fear or anxiety. Charlie will be introduced in a positive manner and students will be instructed on how to interact with him. Parents have the ability to opt out of having their student interact with Charlie. If you DO NOT want your student to be around Charlie, then please fill out the opt out form linked here.
For the safety of students with allergies and Charlie, he will not be in the lunch room. Charlie will also remain out of classroom in which parents have a student who opt out. Charlie will be under my supervision and kept on a leash at all times.
Charlie is looking forward to visiting. He would like to thank the Salk PTO for donating some supplies for him be a part of Salk. More information about Charlie and our therapy dog program will be presented in future scoops. Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
Go Seahawks,
Anthony Birkmeier
Band Concert
The winter band concert was held on Wednesday, February 15th. Ms. DeSchutter, brought all of the 5th and 6th grade elementary bands together to show off their amazing talent. The Salk students did a great job.
6th Grade CTE Fair
Under the leadership of FPS Career Navigators Mr. Boyd, Mr. Hammer, & Ms. Webb, Ramblers worked with CTE teachers to develop activities that were age appropriate to help our youngsters understand how to begin crafting the skills necessary to achieve success in our community. Students enjoyed exploring welding with an augmented reality welding simulator. Engineering, robotics, & design were on display thanks to our team of Square One underwater drone operators & FIRST Robotics competitors. Our Future Teachers challenged youngsters to view the critical roles in education a bit differently with fun activities. HOSA Future Healthcare Professionals helped kids understand & attempt performing CPR while challenging others through playing Operation. Our DECA students even helped connect students with the value of money as they collected cash with their teachers', principal's, & district leadership's faces on the bills! Ultimately, our 6th graders had a great time starting the conversation about who they hope to become while they explore the resources & courses available across Fraser Public Schools that will lead them toward that goal

Please Watch the Forecast
Weather is Michigan is crazy. We have seen some beautiful warm days followed by bitter cold days. Please be sure to send your child to school dressed for the weather each day. Students may need warm coats, gloves, hats, scarves, and/or boots on any given day as we start to transition to Spring.
Please take time to label each and every item- because our lost and found gets bombarded with lost winter accessories throughout the season.
Please note that, per Board Policy, we will be having outdoor morning lineup and heading outdoors for our 20 minute recess(es) if the windchill is 10 degrees or warmer.
Time outdoors is time well spent for kids, in all seasons.
