Board Communications
President Tejada was unable to attend this evening's meeting.
Vice President Lie attended a local articulation with local leaders. He also attended Pacifica School District's Open House where he was able to chat with district leaders and staff about workforce housing.
Clerk Salahuddin shared that positive meetings are taking place with those using the garden at the District Office site. During the last San Mateo County School Board Association meeting, she had the opportunity to give updates on property development that was well-received.
Trustee Ng-Garrett hopes everyone had nice spring break.
Trustee Occhipinti said it is reassuring to see that positive COVID-19 cases have decreased in this area. In honor of Earth Day Week, he is proud to see local students practicing social justice for issues important to them.
Student Trustees Share Out
The Student Advisory Council meets bi-weekly throughout the year and focuses on topics of student interest. Student Advisory Representatives and Student Trustees present to the Board of Trustees each year.
Katalina Huazano, Student Trustee from Terra Nova High, shared that the school will begin state testing next week. Also, prom tickets will go on sale with students having the chance to win free tickets, suits, dresses, and more! The return of the school's annual dodgeball tournament will take place during lunch next week, too.
At the next board meeting, our District Student Trustees will have the opportunity to present on events taking place at their school sites.
COVID-19 Report
Michele Jones, District Director of COVID Response, shared that though COVID-19 cases are on the rise, San Mateo County is still considered to have low transmission according to the State and the Center for Disease Control.
Since the start of 2022, there were 443 positive cases reported in January, 103 positive cases reported in February, 18 cases reported in March, and as of this meeting, 32 positive cases reported for the month of April.
One thing noted was the definition of community spread now based on rather on hospitalizations, and not the number of cases. As the current Omicron variant BA.2 is highly contagious, it does not appear to be causing severe disease and hospitalizations.
The county reports that 83.7% of the population is fully vaccinated, with 90.3% of the population aged 12 and over being fully vaccinated.
JUHSD is currently in communication with CAIR (California Immunization Registry) to receive specific vaccination rates for JUHSD students. Also, California leadership has postponed student vaccination mandates to July 1, 2023.
Based on the current low level of community spread, the CDC recommends wearing masks according to your personal preference. The CDPH continues to strongly recommend wearing a well fitting N95 or KN95 mask indoors which are available at each school site.
