CIHS/Early College Funding
A couple of weeks ago, the NC Senate passed their version of the budget with plans to phase out supplemental funding for CIHS/Early College High Schools over the next three years. That funding is crucial to the operations of our CIHS/Early College High Schools. Several will be forced to close without the funding support, particularly those in small or poorer counties. Onslow County Schools will continue to financially support OECHS regardless of the state budget, but the loss of supplemental funding will force the district to take $200,000 from somewhere else and from other schools!
Any cuts to CIHS/Early College High School funding, will actually end up costing North Carolina much more financially! I have attached an overview of a twelve-year study of the costs and benefits of Cooperative Innovative High Schools in North Carolina, conducted by SERVE.
For Onslow Early College High School, the $200,000 that we are slated to receive this year will help pay for hub buses ($98,000), college textbooks ($60,000+), a part-time guidance counselor ($25,000) , college field trips ($2,000), and supplies/paper/copies/equipment ($15,000). Hub buses and college books will cost us approximately $160,000 next year alone. That number will likely rise to $180,000 for the 2020-2021 school year.
Luckily, the House and Governor both included the continuation of CIHS/Early College funding in their budgets. A conference committee has been formed and the House and Senate are deliberating to craft a final budget. This is a time of compromise for both sides.
Here is the list of conference committee members:

All Onslow legislators are on this list! Please take time to contact them and let them know how much you value OECHS and support our supplemental funding!
Good Luck, Mrs. Gagnon!
ACT Prep for Juniors
We are going to use several ACT Prep resources this year. The first that I want you to sign up for is https://www.prepfactory.com/u/vBok0. I have created a class for OECHS Juniors and will be able to activate the pre-assessments once some folks join. From that point, It should guide you with areas that need some additional practice!
The second site is https://www.act.org/content/act/en/products-and-services/the-act/test-preparation.htm. You will need to scroll down the ACT site and click on the blue box that says "Start Practicing with ACT Academy". ACT offers a question-a-day, practice tests, and other resources once you register your profile.
It is never too early to prep for the ACT!
