News and Updates

Hello Orenco Families! I hope you and your child had a good family conference connecting with your new teacher this year. With wildfires and a few bumps in our plans, we will work to make sure everyone has the materials they need to get the school year started. Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and understanding. Please continue to reach out if you have questions or concerns that we can help with.

In service to you,

Allison Combs, Principal

Materials Pick-up

Due to air quality, we are moving our 2nd day of Materials Pick-up to Tuesday, September 15 from 2pm to 6 pm. If you already received your materials bag, you do not need to come. We will have the "whiteboards" if you want to get one.

We are expecting more chromebooks and will let you know when we receive them. If you have a device or other computer at home, please use until we can fill requests. Schools across HSD are also waiting for more chromebooks.

Any student who has left Hillsboro School District should return borrowed chromebooks from the spring.

Free meals for all students

HSD is providing free meals to all students, Mondays through Fridays, when school is in session, through at least December 2020. Meals are being delivered via bus routes (check http://www.hsd.k12.or.us/mybus for stop locations and times). They are also available in a drive-through/walk-up between 11:45 am to 12:45 pm at six schools: Century High, Brown Middle, Evergreen Middle, Poynter Middle, South Meadows Middle, and Lincoln St Elementary. Any student or parent can go to any bus stop or hub location to get food.

News Around the Community

Orenco Elementary will be saying good-bye to Office Secretary Lucy Smith in the coming two weeks. After 19 years and wearing all kinds of hats, Lucy is pursuing other opportunities. You can still find her volunteering at Orenco and a part of the community. Best of luck to Lucy!

An Admin Support position will be posted for Orenco on 9/15-9/20 on the HSD applications site. The position is bilingual (Spanish) required.

Growing up with Orenco (pictures above)

This is a story that grade 2 teacher, Mr. Jeff Hazen, shared recently with our Orenco staff and he gave me permission to share with all of our Orenco families! Orenco can really grow with you!! Before teaching grade 2, Mr. Hazen also spent many years teaching students as an English Language specialist.

A lot of you remember my son, Cooper. He was born at the end of my first year at Orenco. Many of you were at the baby shower that you threw for us in the library.

He grew and came to Orenco for K-6.

In Kindergarten, he was lucky enough to have Suzanne Kirkpatrick for his teacher. One day he came home with a bean plant they had planted as a project. We planted it and it grew and produced a handful of beans. I remember we each ate one and saved the rest for seed. Every year we planted the seeds and got more and more beans.

At the beginning of his Sixth Grade year, he brought some beans to have with Suzanne.

Tonight we picked more of “Cooper’s Kinder Beans”. They are always the best beans we’ve ever eaten.

Just wanted to say thanks to all the teachers at Orenco here before we start another year. It’s always been an amazing garden.

Orenco Campus

Thank you to the volunteers who are keeping Orenco beautiful this summer! Much appreciation to the families and individuals who are keeping flower beds watered and weeded.

Our facilities are closed. Please do not remove caution tape or other barriers on the play structures. We ask that everyone follows the guidelines for groups and social distancing.

In the coming weeks, HSD facilities will be installing a new cover to the reader board sign to prevent people tampering with our messages that are posted outside.

If you observe any issues, you can contact HSD main phone line to report.

Orenco will participate in Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) until November 5th at the earliest. November 5th is the end of the 1st quarter of school. HSD leaders will begin to view our metrics in mid-October based on the Governor's guidance and the Oregon Department of Education for next steps, if possible. Students can continue with CDL, even if our building reopens for in-person education.
