HSE Schools Community Bulletin Board

Want to know what new and exciting things are happening in 2018? Check out the CBB!


HSE Schools has created a Community Bulletin Board on its district website. This will serve as a central location to find information about activities and events promoted by organizations that serve our students and their families. This is where the Fishers Library, YMCA, S.P.O.R.T.S. and other groups' registration information will be located.

ISTEP

The purpose of the Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress-Plus (ISTEP+) Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress Plus (ISTEP+) program is to measure student achievement in the subject areas of English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science (Grades 4, 6 and 10), and Social Studies (Grades 5 and 7). In particular, ISTEP+ reports student achievement levels according to the Indiana Academic Standards that were adopted by the Indiana State Board of Education. The assessments are administered in two parts:


  • Part 1 consists of applied skills (open-ended) items, and
  • Part 2 includes multiple-choice and technology-enhanced items.


Both Part 1 and Part 2 are required components of the ISTEP+ program and are used to measure student mastery of the Indiana Academic Standards.


This year both part 1 and part 2 of ISTEP will be given on the iPad at the intermediates in HSE. This means that students will be typing responses in sentence/paragraph responses to open-ended items in part 1. It has been asked if students are allowed to bring a wireless keyboard to do this typing. Bringing a keyboard is acceptable; however, if you and your child decide to do this, it is important that he/she begins using the keyboard to become familiar with it prior to testing.


Assessment Windows

  • ISTEP+ Part 1 – February 26-March 9, 2018
  • ISTEP+ Part 2 – April 16-May 4, 2018


We ask that if at all possible that scheduling appointments, especially during the first week of testing periods, is avoided. This allows your child to take the assessment in the natural environment of the classroom and not have a make-up date/time. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher.

Safe Visitor Badges

Safe Visitor Badges

Per HSE Policy, visitors must have their Safe Visitor Badge scanned to check-in to the building. Please download the SafeVisitor App (available for iPhones and in Google Play for all other phones) or have your badge available when you come into the school. Looking up names can lead to the wrong person being signed in.


Upon leaving, please give your printed badge to the office staff for quick check-out.

6th Grade Field Trip to Fall Creek Junior High

On February 6 2018, the 6th grade class will walk across the street to Fall Creek Junior High to take a tour of the school. This is a great opportunity for the students to get acquainted with the layout of the school and meet the staff, making the transition smoother for next year. Each student is required to have a permission slip on file prior to the field trip. The permission slip can be found via the link below or on our website. They are due back by February 1st.

6th Grade Parent Information Night @ Fall Creek Junior High

Save the date, February 7th, for the upcoming Parent Information Night for incoming 7th graders at Fall Creek Junior High. More information can be found here.

Global School Play Day

FCI will be participating in the Global School Play Day to raise awareness about the necessity of unstructured play for kids. Unstructured play allows for peer interactions and is an important component of social-emotional learning. Free, child-driven, creative play also protects against the effects of pressure and stress.


On Wednesday, February 7, 2018, students may bring anything they wish to play with to school. Restrictions may include but may not be limited to: toys that do not require batteries or require electricity, no slime, and games that do not involve gambling.* No devices. Since some of our students do not often play or own very many toys/games that aren't electronic in nature, here are some ideas: board games, dolls, Legos, blocks, trucks, cars, racetracks, playing cards, empty cardboard boxes, markers, jigsaw puzzles, social games (charades, Pictionary, etc.). Please be sure your child puts their name on their belongings.


*Note - Other items will be reviewed on an as needed basis to render appropriateness.

Screenagers - February 22nd

We are thrilled to present SCREENAGERS: Growing Up in the Digital Age, a documentary about the biggest parenting issue of our time.


Are you watching kids scroll through life, with their rapid-fire thumbs and a six-second attention span? Physician and filmmaker Delaney Ruston saw that happening with her own kids and began a quest to uncover how it might impact their development. As with her other two award-winning documentaries on mental health, Ruston takes a deeply personal approach as she probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including her own, to explore struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction.


Through poignant, and unexpectedly funny stories, along with surprising insights from authors, psychologists, and brain scientists, SCREENAGERS reveals how tech time impacts kids’ development and also offers solutions on how adults can empower their kids to best navigate the digital world to find balance.


SCREENAGERS addresses the most pervasive parenting issue of our time head on—depicting teen struggles over social media, video games and internet addiction. The film empowers kids to best navigate the digital world and provides practical resources to help them do it.


This FREE event is presented by: YMI, Fishers Youth Assistance, Parents in Partnership and Peyton Riekhof Foundation. Make sure to RSVP for seats.

Creating Positive Relationships (CPR)

Creating Positive Relationships (CPR) will be hosting a Parent Seminar for 5th grade parents on Tuesday, February 27 from 6-7pm in the cafeteria. At this parent support meeting, you will learn strategies to begin conversations to help your child navigate the changes that occur physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially during puberty. While this evening is designed for 5th grade parents specifically, all parents are welcome.


Actual CPR lessons will not be taught in 5th grade, but will be taught in 6th grade during PE class. More information on the 6th grade CPR lessons will be provided in the coming weeks.

Counselor's Corner

The counselors have been busy the past couple weeks going into classrooms and doing classroom guidance lessons with their students. Below are some of the topics that were covered at each grade level.


5th grade

- students were introduced to "I Statements" as a conflict resolution strategy

- students practiced using "I Statements" in conflict situations to communicate how they feel, why they feel that way, and what they need from their friends in order for the relationship to continue

- students discussed early college and career planning and career exploration

- students completed a career interest inventory to match their personality traits and interests with possible career choices


6th grade

- Review of goals set at the beginning of the year.

- Transition to junior high and selecting electives.

- Intro to high school topics like diplomas and graduation requirements.

- College & careers.

- All students completed a career interest inventory.

Notes from the Nurse

ATTENTION PARENTS OF ALL 5th GRADERS:

It is never too soon to start planning for next school year! The Indiana State Department of Health requires all students who will be in 6th grade for the 2018-2019 school year to receive 2 additional vaccines prior to the start of the school year. Your child will be eligible to receive these immunizations when he/she is eleven years of age. The additional vaccines are:


-- Meningococcal vaccine

-- Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria & pertussis) booster


NEW for next year: All 6th graders are required to have received TWO doses of HEP A.

Immunizations can be obtained at the office of your family physician, pharmacy walk-in clinics, the Hamilton County Health Department (317-776-8500), or the Marion County Health Department (317-221-2000). The Hamilton County Health Department does require on-line registration for new clients.


Please be sure to send an updated shot record to FCI, Attention Carol Gump, School Nurse. Records may be hand delivered, mailed, faxed, or emailed (cgump@hse.k12.in.us).

ATTENTION ALL 6th GRADE STUDENTS AND PARENTS!

The FCJH Band, Choir, and Orchestra Programs WANT YOU! You have an exciting opportunity to participate in band, choir, or orchestra next year at FCJH. Participants will learn how to read music and how to play an instrument or develop your abilities as a vocalist. Classes will meet every day at FCJH just like any other academic class. Every student at FCJH receives SOAR time (comparable to our current SLT time), even the students in a performance ensemble!!!!!


Students who are not currently in band, choir, or orchestra have the opportunity to join at FCJH.


“Research shows that students who participate in musical ensembles at school have higher attendance rates and test scores. Even more, new studies show that making music with peers as part of the school day can lead to increased levels of empathy and can lead to making friends faster!”


All you need to do is put band, choir, or orchestra on your schedule as an elective! Students who are currently in band or orchestra simply need to write down band or orchestra to continue to participate next year!


Grab your friends and don’t miss out on all of the fun! COME BE IN THE PERFORMING ARTS!!

FCI Teams Up with Goodwill

Fall Creek Intermediate and HSE school district have teamed up with Goodwill to collect clothing donations. HSE schools will receive a Goodwill clothing voucher to distribute to those in need for every 13-gallon bag of gently used clothing received. The FCI bin is located in the music hallway near the display cases.
