December Violet Views
HOME OF THE SUPERVIOLETS
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Dear Parents,
We hope that all of our families had an unforgettable Thanksgiving Holiday! In December, days always seem to fly by quickly, so we have much work to do in a short period of time. We will begin our winter benchmark assessments this week, so we can know for certain what progress our students have made over the first semester. The data that we receive from our benchmark assessments also provides an opportunity for teachers to plan for the second semester to ensure that we are individualizing student learning.
As winter approaches, please remember to send students with coats, hats, and
gloves, as the weather is always unpredictable. We do send students outside to play during recess, as long as the wind chill is above 25 degrees, to assure that students get plenty of physical activity.
We would like to send out well wishes to all of our families over the holiday season and in the New Year!
Sincerely,
Dee Copas
Holiday Toy Drive
Violet Elementary will be working with the Violet Township Fire Department to collect new, elementary aged toys. This Toy Drive will take place through December 15th. All toys will be donated to the Violet Township Fire Department and will help families in need during the holiday season. We are especially in need of toys and games that are appropriate for children ages 0-11 years. If you would like to donate a toy, please send it in with your child. We ask that you send new toys and please do not gift wrap them. Thank you so much for your continued support!

Help your child beat holiday stress by following these tips:
1. Limit TV and video games. It may be easier to let the TV or video games occupy your child's time, however, children who are stressed need some type of physical activity or exercise. Physical activity is a great way to decrease stress in everyone.
2. Remember routines. Routines are very important to children. During the holiday season, children's routines can be disrupted with shopping expeditions and special events. When a routine is broken, stress can result. Try to keep your child on their routine to keep the stress level down.
3. Family traditions. These are very important to children. They offer comfort and security. Enjoy the family traditions you have started. Some traditions to try might be: baking cookies, reading holiday books together, or visiting an elderly person.
4. Attitude check. Both children and parents need to have an attitude check before the holiday season begins. Take a deep breath, and have everyone in the family pledge to make the holiday season a time of joy and peace. With the right attitude, the holiday season can be enjoyed by everyone.
5. Nutrition. Eating healthy helps us to stay well. Plan at least one healthy meal as a family everyday. Remember to toss in a healthy snack while you're out shopping.
6. Rest and relaxation. Everyone, especially children needs to take a "time out" over the holiday season to rest and relax. When a child is well-rested, they will enjoy the holiday activities better. Schedule some R&R time for everyone in the family.
7. Laugh. Laughter is still the best way to beat stress and change everyone's mood from bad to good. Take time to read the comics to your children or find a holiday joke book with family humor at your bookstore or library.

REMINDER
At this time of year we frequently have children bringing cough drops to use at school. Cough drops are considered to be medication and must be accompanied by a note from the parent and are kept in the clinic. Students must be dismissed from class to come to the clinic for cough drops.
HELPFUL HINTS
With the battles of cold and flu season, absenteeism is on the rise. Help us to have a healthy school environment by sending only well rested and healthy children to school. If your child has been sent home sick or is at home ill, please be certain that they are fever free for 24 hours (without the aid of medication) and/or free of vomiting or diarrhea symptoms for 24 hours, prior to returning to school.
