Weekly Updates from Madison High School - January 27, 2019
PowerSchool Mobile App Available
Enjoy the convenience of monitoring your students grades and attendance right from your phone. This app gives you access to real-time student information such as grades, assignments and attendance. There are also new dashboard widgets for quick access to other important information, including GPA and assignments due. San Diego Unified School District has been using PowerSchool for several years now, however, this is the first year that the mobile app has been made available within the district. Parents can download the PowerSchool Mobile App from the App Store or Google Play; use district code KFTF. One great feature is that you can sign up in PowerSchool to get daily updates sent to you via email.
Urban Beats Group Therapy for Teens
Emotions are hard. We don't always know how we feel or why...and it can feel messy. Urban Beats, one of Madison's community partners, is helping teens learn new ways of coping with emotions, as well as understanding how emotions impact our feelings and behavior. The group therapy sessions allow teens to talk with a trained professional, play a few games with their peers, and learn some new tricks about taking care of themselves. The group therapy sessions are held at their Market Street location. Teens can sign up in advance or drop-in. This is a no-cost service. Parents must complete a consent form for their student to participate. Visit www.sdurbanbeats.org.
CORE Academy
Now that the second semester has begun, it is time for a fresh start. All students are welcome to attend Saturday Core Academy on February 8, 8 am, Rm. B22 to get help with completing assignments, receiving additional instruction in core academic content, or working with a teacher to understand concepts with which they may be struggling. Core Academy is one of the options available to students to get help. Students can also make individual appointments with teachers or attend during their posted office hours. Students who have less than a 2.0 GPA on their semester report card are on the LOP (Loss of Privileges) list. They need to be proactive to improve their grades, attend Core Academy for help and commit to completing their school work. All students are welcome to participate; sign up in advance. Click on the graphic for information to help students prepare for their CORE Academy session.

The NFHS Network is part of the CBS Sports Digital Network to provide fans with the ability to stream high definition school sports on any device, from wherever they happen top be. All NFHS Network events are available to watch online at www.NFHSnetwork.com and through the NFHS Network Live App for iOS and Android. This is a subscription based service that can be canceled at anytime.
UC San Diego Research Scholars Summer Program
There are unique summer opportunities available for high school students at UC San Diego Extension. Students can participate in a 3-week summer Academic Connections program, a Global Environmental Leadership and Sustainability program or the Research Scholars Program. Generally, these experiences are tuition based programs that are competitive in nature and fill up in advance of the summer months. Each program has a specific application deadline and may require a GPA verification. These experience are beneficial for a college resume and help provide familiarity with the college environment.

From Nurse Jen: The average American eats a lot of salt, resulting in the consumption of twice as much sodium as the daily-recommended amount (1500mg)! Try using more whole and fresh food in place of processed items like Cup o’ Noodle (1050 mg) and vending machine food (Takis 840 mg).
