History of The SpaceShipTwo
Virgin Galactic's SpaceShipTwo crashed on October 31, 2014. The devastating crash happened in a test flight in California. The designer of the space craft is an American company called Scaled Composites. The companies headquarters is located in Mojave California. The company was founded (created) by Dick Rutan and Burt Rutan and currently owned by Northrop Grumman.
Why Did The SpaceShipTwo Crash?
The SpaceShipTwo crashed because of a mixture of human error and some safety issues with the ship. Co-pilot Michael Alsbury unlocked the feathering system (braking system) when the ships rockets were accelerating the spacecraft. The feathering system could not handle the amount of force and vibration from the rockets. This made the SpaceShipTwo to disinagrate and kill the Co-pilot and seriously injure the pilot.
The SpaceShipTwo was created for people to have the chance to travel to space. The ship costs about $200,000 to ride. You could buy a house for that amount of money! Did you know that popular celebrities such as Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Lady Gaga were on the waiting list to ride the ship. The development costs for the ship were about $500,000,000. That is a ton of money!!!
Co-pilot Micheal Alsbury And Pilot Peter Siebold
Sadly these two men were not both able to survive the crash but at least one of them survived. The Co-pilot Micheal Alsbury was not able to evacuate the ship in time which resulted as death and Peter Siebold was able to escape the crash on a parachute but was seriously injured.
