What's Happening in PBS?
Week of 9/15-9/19
Hello!
Welcome to another week at the BSFC!
Last week, we finished up with our first lesson over the mystery of Anna Garcia! We have collected and analyzed all the evidence and now we start to dive deeper into some of the medical issues that Anna had.
The students also took their first test last week. Because this course has an End of Course Exam at the end of the year where the students have the opportunity to earn college credit, we need to ensure that all students understood the concepts we cover in each unit - so the students are able to retake the test to improve their comprehension of the objectives and earn a better score. To do this, I have divided up the test into three sections:
1. Scientific Method
2. Examining the Scene
3. Analyzing the Evidence
If the student earned a 69% or below on any one of these sections, they will be required to retake that section of the test either before or after school. If they take it before school, the retakes will be in Mr. Lee's Room (E11) during collaboration and if they take it after school, the retakes will be in my room.
If they get a 70% or higher on their 1st re-take, they will earn 1/2 credit back on every question and I will update their score in the gradebook.
If they do not hit the 70% benchmark on the 1st re-take, they will be required to schedule and attend a study session with me so that we can re-examine the content and identify the problematic areas and then they will retake the section of the test again. If they hit the 70% benchmark, they will earn 1/2 credit back on every question and i will update their score in the gradebook. If after the 2nd re-take attempt at the test, they do not hit the 70% benchmark, there will be no more re-takes and they will keep the original score they earned.
I will be explaining this process to the kids tomorrow. They will also get a spreadsheet that tells them the sections they have to retake (if any). Please feel free to contact me with any questions.
As for this week, We are moving into the DNA section of our class. Tomorrow we will be talking about the test retake policy, how to use a lab notebook correctly and brainstorming about our current knowledge of DNA. Tuesday and Wednesday we will be learning about the structure of DNA and building a model of DNA. Thursday and Friday we will be extracting DNA out of plant cells and our own cheek cells.
Looking forward - parent/teacher conferences at the Freshman Center are next Wednesday (9/24) from 3-8pm. I'd love to have lots of visitors!
Feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns.
