Change is Inevitable / Change is Good!
Alvamar Country Club had a tremendous year comprised of many great events
and happenings along with several enhancements to the clubhouse and golf
course facilities. Following is a listing of some of the special
occasions that took place over this past year. What is perhaps more
exciting is what is yet to come. Alvamar is on the verge of an important
ownership change that will see the golf course property enhanced and
improved for members, homeowners, University of Kansas
student athletes, and patrons. In the very near future Alvamar will be hosting
several opportunities to share in detail the new changes with homeowners,
members, and the general public. The first such event is scheduled for November 21st, 2014 (The All Membership Meeting). This meeting will address the exciting changes soon to come and will be represented by the new ownership group. For more information regarding these open house events and informational meetings, please contact The Club.

event, which included a brunch buffet and a visit from Santa Claus.
A letter from Greg Moore..
It is hard to believe that fall is already here. It is one of my favorite times of the year with all the vibrant fall foliage on the course. With that also comes the “leaf ball” rule (when playing among friends), shorter golf hours and carts on path when the zoysia goes dormant. This is also the perfect time of year to join up and catch a game with friends in the Alvabar and enjoy some outstanding service with our Alvamar staff.
This time of year also is where we look to the Alvamar Membership to fill upcoming vacancies on the Alvamar Executive Committee. We have five outstanding candidates this year and I would encourage you to vote and voice your support for these outstanding individuals. Additionally, we have filled a few of our vacancies on our subcommittees, but we still have several opportunities out there. So if you are interested in helping Alvamar continue to be the “Place to Play”, please contact myself or Bryan Minnis.
Cheers,
Greg Moore
November Golf Updates:
Here we are in November and we are starting looking for those warm days to come out and play a quick 9 or 18. Besides the cold weather kid’s activities, community functions, and daylight hours makes it difficult it find the time. Remember, the hitting bays are always open and that early Christmas Shopping can be done!!! We still have clothing and equipment at reduced prices in the Championship Golf Shop, along with lesson packages from all of your Professionals.
On Thursday, November 13th, we will be hosting Cindy Johnson and TherapyWorks for an interactive informational evening about what we can do to keep during the winter months to keep in shape. This is a free seminar for 7:00 – 8:00pm and is open to all members.
On the Championship Course there will be 3 two person events, weather permitting. They are as follows:
November 2 – Better Ball
November 17 – Schamble
November 28 - Scramble
$30 each event includes; Golf, Cart and $10 toward prizes. Tournaments will be contested in tee times. No handicap necessary, each event will be flighted based on one of the nine hole scores. The two person team must be playing with someone to attest to the team score. Please contact Paul at phooser@alvamar.com or in the Championship Golf Shop to sign up.
November Updates...
In November at the Championship Course we will launch a tournament series called the Turkey Tour. The tour will be three two-person team events for a little more competitive action for 2014. If you have a friend that you would like to play with that does not have a handicap, don't worry. The events will be flighted based on one of the team nine hole scores the day of the event. So either the front nine or back nine will be chosen to divide the field.
The dates and formats for the events are as follows:
Sunday, November 2 Two Person Better Ball
Sunday, November 16 Two Person Shamble
Friday, November 28 Two Person Scramble
For members of Alvamar the entry fee will be $20 which includes the cart and $10 toward prizes. For non-members the entry will be $30. The tour will play in tee times. Pick your own foursome, but to compete the team must have someone in their group to attest to the score. Call the Championship Course to sign up and reserve your tee time, 842-1907.

Tee To Green
November 2014
By Kent Morgison
Fall has finally arrived and the colors are in full display at your club. The trees on the property are well into their transformation from the green color that is prevalent throughout the majority of the golfing season to the beautiful yellow, rust and bronzes that are a staple of a Kansas November. There is no better time or place to come out and enjoy nature’s beauty than Alvamar and your home for golf. The weather is ever-changing, but warm days are abundant in the month of November, perfect for a quick fall round. A couple of things to note as fall is ushered in and your Alvamar maintenance staff prepares for the upcoming winter:
Beginning November 1st, Alvamar will implement its long standing policy of restricting carts to paths for the remainder of the season. This minor inconvenience plays a vital role in allowing our warm season, zoysia fairways, to endure the sometimes brutal Kansas winters. Dormant zoysia has been shown to be extremely susceptible to wear patterns and damage due to cart and other traffic, therefore, whatever can be done to limit winter damage will pay dividends next spring as they awaken for another season. Your fellow members and staff appreciate your adherence to this policy. As always, if you are in need of a handicap flag and conditions are not too wet, Eric and the staff will be happy to accommodate your needs.
Also, as you surely have noticed, debris ranging from leaves to hedge balls are dropping quickly from the trees. We work daily on cleanup of the course, but it is a seemingly endless task. Please bear with us as we do our best to keep up with this process, and it is our hope that we will be relatively clean in short order.
Lastly, removal of dead trees and trimming of other areas will commence and be ongoing throughout the winter months. Although the list of trees requiring removal is not as expansive as the last couple of winters, there is still a great deal of work to be done in this area, as we continue to make your course more player and maintenance friendly.
Thanks for a wonderful season of golf at Alvamar, and we look forward to the winter work to prepare your facility for a great 2015.
P.S. If you are a wood burner, please give us a call at 843-6303, we sell firewood at very reasonable prices.
Food & Beverage
Hot soup and grilled cheese sandwiches on a cold day is just part of fall. Here is an old favorite. Tomato soup:

1 onion diced
2 cloves garlic chopped
2 lbs tomatoes peeled and diced
2 carrots peeled diced

Salt and pepper to taste
Sauté onion in butter till softened, add garlic and sweat it lightly, add tomato, chicken stock, carrot and herbs. Bring to simmer, cover , cook 20 + minutes (till veg is tender), add cream, salt and pepper bring back to simmer then off the fire. Puree in blender or food processor, run through a sieve if preferred, if not simply Enjoy
Until next month, Good cooking.

Food & Beverage Update: November
Welcome to the fall season at Alvamar. I’d like to thank everyone who participated in the Fall Festival, Bounty Blowout and Italian Wine Dinner.
There are several upcoming events at Alvamar; Thanksgiving Day Buffet, Santa Brunch, New Year’s Eve Celebration. Member events are extremely important to the Food and Beverage Department. The staff tries particularly hard to ensure that every member event runs smoothly and is a success. As members you can help in that process. It’s helpful for the Food & Beverage department know how many guests are attending each event. Our members assist us greatly by making reservations and including the name and number of other members or guests in your party. While I am always happy to see members join us for events, walk-ins do create a challenge with our larger dining events such as holiday brunches. The electronic newsletter and weekly club emails make booking reservations easier than ever. Located with each event advertisement is a link to an email address where your reservation can be sent. Your commitment and participation is greatly appreciated and together we can continue to enjoy many events in the future.
Try this Pumpkin Martini at your Thanksgiving gatherings.
· 11/2 floz vanilla vodka (jigger, such as Stoli®)
· 11/2 floz irish cream liqueur (jigger, such as Bailey's®)
· 11/2 floz liqueur (jigger pumpkin flavored, such as Hiram Walker®)
· 1 cup ice cubes
· 1 pinch ground cinnamon
· 1 pinch ground nutmeg
Pour the vanilla flavored vodka, Irish cream liqueur, and pumpkin flavored liqueur into a cocktail shaker over ice. Cover, and shake until the outside of the shaker has frosted. Strain into a chilled martini glass, and garnish with a sprinkle of ground cinnamon and ground nutmeg to serve.
