Earth Day Recycling Project
Did you know the average American throws away 82 pounds of clothing a year? This year for Earth Day, the PTA will be doing a fundraiser/recycling project. We will be collecting shoes, clothes, and textiles (sheets, blankets, etc...) in bins in the entry area. The items donated can be gently to well used!! All levels accepted!! The grade level with the most pounds per person will win a popsicle party at recess so hold onto these things as you start your spring cleaning. The contest will run April 3rd - April 21st.
We are partnering with Recycle2support and Keep Colleyville Beautiful to recycle all donated items.
Congrats!

World Down Syndrome Day
GCISD celebrates differences and abilities of all students and staff!
Please join us in celebrating World Down Syndrome Day on Tuesday, 3/21 by ROCKING YOUR SOCKS!
You can wear different socks, brightly colored socks, long socks, printed socks, mismatched socks, any kind of fun socks, in honor of our friends that rock an extra chromosome. Return from Spring Break and on 3-21, ROCK YOUR SOCKS!
World Down Syndrome Day is on March 21st to symbolize a third copy of the 21st
chromosome in people with Down syndrome. Communities all over the world will be
celebrating the acceptance and inclusion of people who have Down syndrome by Rocking their Socks and doing Random Acts of Kindness. For extra fun, which school can complete 321 random acts of kindness on 3/21? #WDSD17 #GCISDROCKS321
Benefits of inclusive environments for today's children and tomorrow's adults:
When children with Down syndrome and other disabilities are given opportunities to participate, all children benefit from this and environments of friendship, acceptance, respect, and high expectations are created. These environments also prepare today’s children for life as tomorrow’s adults.
Did you know?
* People with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes instead of the typical 46. There is an extra copy of the 21st chromosome.
* Down syndrome is the most common genetic condition, with one in every 691 babies is born with Down syndrome in the United States.
* People First Language - It is Down syndrome, not Downs, and people have Down syndrome, they are not Down syndrome. Rather than “Downs kid” or “Joey is Downs”, it’s “Joey has Down syndrome”. Down syndrome does not define individuals, it is simply a part of who they are.
* There are three types of Down syndrome:
Trisomy 21 (or non-disjunction) is the most common. All cells have an extra chromosome.
Translocation Down syndrome, when part of chromosome 21 becomes attached (translocated) onto another chromosome. Children with translocation Down syndrome have the usual two copies of chromosome 21, but they also have additional material from chromosome 21 attached to the translocated chromosome. Mosaic Down syndrome, where only some cells have an extra chromosome, but other cells in the body are typical.
* One of the most significant challenges for people with Down syndrome is low muscle tone. Low muscle tone affects speech, gross motor skills, and fine motor skills.
* People don’t have “mild” Down syndrome, or “severe” Down syndrome. Ability is not dependent on the condition, but rather the individual. People either have Down syndrome or they don’t.
* Contrary to popular belief, people with Down syndrome are not always happy. They experience every emotion like a typical person.
* You will get what you expect! Just because a child has Down syndrome, it does not mean they are unable to be well behaved or follow directions. Kids with Down syndrome are smart, it takes them a few minutes to recognize expectations.
* When communicating with an individual with Down syndrome, give them an extra 10 seconds to reply to a question rather than finish their sentence.
* Kids and adults with Down syndrome have much to say. They have thoughts, ideas, and enjoy meaningful conversations. Take the time to listen and be a friend to someone with Down syndrome!

PTA Rally Day
Spring has Sprung?!?!
The Bransford Garden Club will begin our spring meetings on Wednesday March 1st at 7 am. This spring we will continue to learn more about growing our own vegetables by planting, caring for, and harvesting green beans and squash. We will also learn about the importance of bees and other flying insects with our butterfly garden. We look forward to seeing all of our little gardeners the first Wednesday of each month at 7 am: 3/1, 4/5, and 5/3.
If you as a family or Bransford organization would like to help with the garden, but can not make our meetings, you still can! We welcome your help by watering and weeding our garden on the weekend. Here is the sign up genius for the spring: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c054baaa922aa8-garden
