February 2019
From The Principal's Desk
This month a select group of 4th graders will participate in the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). NAEP is the largest nationally representative and continuing assessment of what students know and can do in various subjects. NAEP is administered by the National Center for Education Statistics, within the U.S. Department of Education. NAEP is different from our state assessments because it is a common measure of achievement across the country. The results are released as The Nation’s Report Card, which provides information about student achievement to educators, parents, policymakers, and the public.
We are excited that our school is participating in NAEP. We know that George Washington’s students will show what our nation’s students know and can do.

Mr. Kevin Bogert - 4th Grade and Mrs. Rebecca Bogert - 5th Grade
Mr. Bogert’s fourth-grade class and Mrs.Bogert’s fifth-grade class have had the opportunity to create and develop stories to share with each other this year. The goal is for the students to improve their writing. When the students exchange papers with the other class, it gives the students an additional audience. This gives students an added purpose for writing. It also helps them to develop those critical revising and editing skills.
Earlier this year, both classes were tasked with designing and selling a haunted mansion. Recently, the students were asked to create and design an ugly sweater. After creating an “ugly sweater” the students were to write a persuasive ad. Classes exchanged anonymous works. Each class discussed which works met the criteria of being a persuasive ad and then chose their top three favorites.
With the start of the new year, both classes will continue to expand their knowledge of writing skills. One of the first upcoming projects will be choosing and selecting resolutions and goals to guide us for the new year. We look forward to a great second half of the school year.
