Veterans Share Memories from Years in Service
Each year, Mr. Ray Russell visits Austinville to speak to the second grade students about his three years in the Vietnam War. This year, his father, ninety-five year old, Raymon Russell, who served four years in WWII joined his son. These veterans shared medals, uniforms, money, and other memorabilia with an interested group of students. Both have a special connection with the second graders. Teacher, Mrs. Stacy Westbrook is their daughter and granddaughter. Mrs. Westbrook's grandfather served as an army medic attached to an engineering company and brought home a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. While years later, her father served in the 369th Signal Battalion. We are so appreciative of their visit to our school, but even more of their service to our country.

Foster Grandmothers
The Foster Grandparent Program provides a way for volunteers age 55 and over to stay active by serving children and youth in the community. It's true that volunteering helps you live longer and promotes a positive outlook on life. The Austinville faculty sees the positive outlook of foster grandmother, Ms. Joie Hannay. Ms. Joie always has a sweet smile on her face! Her son, Sean attended Austinville for kindergarten and first grade. During that time, she was a member of the PTA and worked in the health room under principal, Mr. Dave Livingston. Ms. Joie moved on to work at Delta Airlines, cared for her ailing parents, and even lived in Canada for a bit. After living in many places, Mrs. Joie returned to her Austinville roots in 2010. This time in the role of a foster grandmother. She feels like she gets as much back as she gives and wouldn't trade this job for anything. Ms. Joie doesn't have any grandchildren yet so she enjoys being a grandparent for a few hours a day. When asked, Ms. Joie said, "I think we (the students and I) bring joy to each others' lives and I appreciate every day I get to spend with the children."
