Chaplain's Chatter: Thoughts, Reflections and Musings from the Catholic Chaplain
This past Sunday, Fr. Ed invited us to use Lent as a time to reflect on how we see ourselves and the world we live in. Do we see our self as worthy of God's love? How do we see others? Lent is indeed a wonderful time to reflect on how we "see".
More than 400 years ago St. Ignatius Loyola encouraged a prayer practice, called the Daily Examen, that can help us see as God sees. The Examen is a method of reviewing your day in the presence of God. It has five steps, which most people take more or less in order, and it usually takes 10 to 15 minutes per day. Try this version of St. Ignatius’s prayer:
1. Ask God for light.
I want to look at my day with God’s eyes, not merely my own.
2. Give thanks.
The day I have just lived is a gift from God. I am grateful.
3. Review the day.
I carefully look back on the day just completed, being guided by the Holy Spirit.
4. Face your shortcomings.
I face up to what is wrong—in my life and in me.
5. Look toward the day to come.
I ask where I need God in the day to come.
St. Ignatius encouraged people to talk to Jesus like a friend. End the Daily Examen with a conversation with Jesus. Ask forgiveness for your sins. Ask for his protection and help. Ask for his wisdom about the questions you have and the problems you face. Do all this in the spirit of gratitude. Your life is a gift, and it is adorned with gifts from God. You can end the Daily Examen with the Our Father.
Lenten Peace,
~ Jamie
Lenten Eucharistic Adoration and Compline
Come spend some time away in prayer…
Eucharistic Adoration is simply spending quiet time in the presence of Jesus. When Jesus was suffering His agony in the garden, He asked his apostles, “Could you not spend one hour with Me?” Jesus’ lamentation touches our hearts, and we respond, “We can.” Adoration is for anyone who wishes to come.
Compline is an evening prayer that settles the mind and heart and serves as a peaceful connection between one day or week and the next. You do not have to be Catholic too participate and there are no special requirements. Come again or for the first time!
