English Department
Students in English courses are able to obtain reading, writing, and listening and speaking skills in a variety of ways. Whether it is in whole class instruction, small groups, or independent work, teachers provide a variety of opportunities to develop skills to excel at Rowland High School and post high school.
In Mr. Hiett’s English 10 Honors classes students worked in groups to create posters on “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe where they had to analyze character, symbolism, and ambiguity within the short story using textual evidence to support their analysis. By working on identifying and analyzing literary techniques in English 10 Honors, it prepares students for upper level courses like AP Language and AP Literature where students write essays on the use of rhetorical devices and literary devices. Currently, in Ms. Chu’s AP Literature class, students are studying Othello by William Shakespeare. They are working in groups to create digital Thinking Maps that focus on characterization, motifs, and poetic devices while incorporating evidence and commentary to support their analysis. By looking back at the work as a whole, students are preparing for their in-class essay, but also practicing the skills necessary to be successful on the AP exam in May.

Read Across America
On March 2nd, the library hosted a Read Across America celebration with one of Mrs. Vasey's 9th grade English Honors classes and Mrs. Orduno's kindergarten class from Killian Elementary. Read Across America is an annual event celebrated on or near the birthday of children's author Dr. Seuss. The purpose is to promote literacy and encourage a love of reading among children. The kindergarten class showcased their newly acquired reading abilities with a fantastic presentation of Green Eggs and Ham. Then they were grouped off with one or two 9th graders to sit together and read children's books chosen as favorites by the freshmen. Some kindergarteners read while others listened, and a fun time was had by all.

Weekly Wellness
This month’s theme is self-care. How do you care for yourself? How do you handle stress? Stress affects you physically and emotionally and can make you feel like you’re out of control. What steps can you take to regain control of your body and mind? Whatever your experience, remember that even if things don’t go as planned - you can get through it. You pick up where you left off and start over again. All of us experience difficult times and we need to remember that a crisis is only temporary. It is in difficult times that we are given an opportunity to develop healthy coping skills that will move us through the storm and help us learn valuable life lessons
