Updates from Mrs. Froning
November 1, 2020
Looking at the week ahead...
On Thursday, November 5th, all students will begin the day attending a class Zoom (using the same link that has been used since August). The purpose of this Zoom is allow students and their teacher to engage in a closing activity as we prepare for our "new" Paths beginning Monday, November 9th.
My Path students will continue working on their Edgenuity courses throughout this week as well with the support of their mentor teacher.
I will be sending an additional newsletter mid-week this week for the purpose of highlighting changes in our procedures (lunch time, recess, etc) for those students returning for In-Person learning. While we will certainly do our best to communicate to you all these changes, please trust that teachers will take the time needed to teach, guide and support students with these changes throughout the school day.
Below is an overview of our arrival and dismissal process.
The Oakley Park staff and I are excited to welcome back those students who will be returning to In-Person learning! We know our Owls who are continuing in My Path or Our Path will be joining with other Oakey Park Owls and outstanding Walled lake teachers as continue on their learning paths too!
I am so thankful for this community and the ongoing support for one another! We are "Oakley Strong...no matter the distance!"
Arrival & Dismissal
Arrival There is no registration for Owl Drop Off, you simply pull up alongside the curb and your student(s) exit the vehicle. Students MUST be seated on the passenger side of the vehicle. It is important that students DO NOT exit their vehicle until 8:50 as this is when the doors open and student may walk directly to their classrooms. It is VERY important we avoid any congregation of students at the entrance and in the hallways.
We ask that students do not arrive at building (walkers or drop off) before 8:50 a.m. Students will enter the building beginning at that time, walking directly to their classrooms. Staff will be on hand to help and ensure adequate spacing between students when traveling in the hallways. An easy way to remind kids about social distancing is that they should be "at least an arms length away from others."
Students will NOT be marked tardy between 9:01 - 9:20 am at this time.
Dismissal: We will begin the dismissal process at 3:40 at this time. If you choose to pick up your students from the front of the building at the end the day please note the following changes:
- All parents/caregivers MUST wear a mask when at school.
- As in previous years, parents/caregivers will sign out students on the computer in the lobby.
- One parent/caregiver in the lobby at a time.
- All parents/caregivers must wait outside, respecting signage instructions and socially distance markers.
- Students will be dismissed in a manner that will avoid a large number of students in the hallway at the same time. (Student names will be read over the PA system. Our sign out form automatically generates a list of name that our secretaries read off.)
- PLEASE be patience and kind to one another as we work together to keep one another safe and healthy!
Students riding buses will be released to their assigned bus, loading one bus at at time. Buses will depart from Oakley Park as soon as all students are loaded and safely seated.
Owl Pick Up students will be called (by number) to the pick up line in groups of about 10 numbers. Thank you in advance to parents/caregivers for following requests/directions given by our staff.

Resources for Families for In-Person Instruction
Regarding siblings and COVID like symptoms:
1. If one of my children is sent home with COVID like symptoms, will my other child(ren) also be send home?
Yes, all siblings will be sent home and must remain home pending a negative COVID test on the student presenting with COVID like symptoms. If the family chooses not to get the symptomatic student tested, all are excluded from school for 10 days. (See question #2 on the COVID-19 Scenario document which is linked below.)
Chrombooks: PLEASE READ
We know that many of our families have checked out a Chromebook from the District for their child(ren). When students in K-5 return to in-person learning, we need to make sure that they have their device and charging cord with them every day. Children will still have some time throughout the day in their classroom where they may be accessing iReady work, submitting an assignment on Google Classroom or working collaboratively with others in their class via technology. We ask that parents keep the Chromebook charged and in their child(ren)’s backpack every day.
If you did not check out a District Chromebook, you are welcome to do the following:
∙ Send in your own device and cord each day with your child (must be a laptop or Chromebook device with a keyboard, video and headphone jack)
OR
∙ Check out a District Chromebook for your child that can be used for this purpose. Our IT Department will be available Monday-Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Educational Services Center (ESC) at 850 Ladd Road Building D . No appointment is necessary so please follow the signs at ESC to the Chromebook checkout. NOTE: The distribution service will be close on Tuesday, November 3rd (Election Day).
It’s important that students have a device ready to go in the event that their classroom or school may go into a quarantine situation so we want everyone to be prepared should we need to shift back to remote learning temporarily. Buildings will not have access to large quantities of devices once our K-5 students return to in-person learning.
*If you are borrowing a Chromebook from the District, your student is EXPECTED to take it back and forth in their backpack daily. Teachers will communicate in advance if there are day(s) students DO NOT need to bring the Chromebook to school.
Synchronous vs. Asynchronous Learning
Live instruction via Zoom throughout the school day.
Asynchronous Learning:
Activities/assignments posted for students In Google Classroom. On Asynchronous days, students will go directly to their Google classroom to view their work for the day. *Note: the work assigned is NOT intended to take the entire day. Students should attend their regularly schedule FAPES classes which will also be Asynchronous. Students will find their FAPES assigned posted in the FAPES teachers Google classrooms. (Link are provided at the end of the this newsletter and classroom teachers will post in their Google classroom stream as well.)

Reflections 2020-2021
The Oakley Park PTA is encouraging all of our Owls to participate in this year’s PTSA Reflections program! Our theme this year is “I Matter Because…”. Students can enter what their interpretation of the theme means to them through music composition, literature, film production, dance choreography, photography, or visual arts. The best part of Reflections is that it is free to enter! All you need to do provide is your creativity! Students can enter up to one piece per category. A celebration will be held for all students that enter the Reflections competition in the spring.
Please read the rules (listed below) prior to submitting your work to ensure all the requirements are met. The Student Entry Form must be fully filled out and turned in with the final product. On the entry form, it asks for an artist statement. When writing the artist statement, consider the following:
How does your work relate to the theme?
What is your personal connection to the theme?
What did you use to create your work (supplies, technology, instrumentation, props, etc.)?
What/Who was your inspiration?
Keep in mind the artist statement accounts for a large part of the scoring!
