FROM MR. ORTMAN and MR. MURTHA
The Mill Creek Community is a diverse one in many ways, which allows us to share cultural and other elements that are unique to our individual backgrounds with one another. Part of our diversity involves families who practice a variety of religions in our Community. Starting on the evening of April 5, our Jewish Community members will begin their 8-day Passover celebration, and our Christian Community members will celebrate Good Friday and Easter Sunday next weekend. Additionally, our Muslim Community members are also engaged in celebration. The Muslim holy month of Ramadan began on March 22 and will take place through April 20.
Each of the aforementioned involve special significance and practices for those who observe them...
- Good Friday and Easter Sunday focus on sacrifice, resurrection, and forgiveness. In some Christian denominations, a 40-day fasting period occurs that involves giving up a preferred item (e.g. candy) during that time period, in addition to abstaining from eating meat on Fridays that fall within the 40 days, as part of the observance.
- Passover commemorates the Exodus of the Israelites from slavery in Egypt. The first night of Passover is usually celebrated with a special dinner, know as a Seder. During a Seder, readings from the Torah and singing are incorporated, and there are a variety of foods offered as part of this celebratory dinner.
- During Ramadan, Muslims focus on fasting, prayer, reflection, showing compassion/kindness, and strengthening community. The fasting component of Ramadan serves as a way for Muslims to practice self-discipline and to strengthen their faith. Fasting is observed between sunrise and sunset during the month.
While the variety of cultural and religious practices in which our Community members engage are diverse, they often share commonalities of focus on family/gathering, self-improvement, and helping others.
Please join us in wishing our Mill Creek Community members who celebrate Good Friday/Easter, Passover, or Ramadan fruitful and meaningful holidays!
Due to the short week next week, our newsletter will return on April 14. In the meantime, enjoy what will hopefully be some time with your families as we head towards some holidays and Spring Break!

IMPORTANT MESSAGE about Personal Electronic Devices...
Teachers have noticed an increase in the amount of electronic devices, especially smart watches, being brought to school by students. In some cases, student personal electronic devices are becoming obtrusive to instruction, especially if alerts are set to go off throughout the school day. Considering this, we would ask the following:
- Please consider having your child keep their personal electronic devices at home.
- If you feel your child must bring their personal electronic device to school, please have them put it on a setting that blocks alerts during the school day. For instance, the newer versions of Apple Smart Watches have a Schooltime feature that allows parents to limit the watch’s functionality during the school day (some older versions, however, do not have this feature).
- Another option is to have your child keep their personal electronic device silenced and in a secure part of their bookbag during the school day.
Additionally, we cannot ensure that a student’s personal electronic device will not go lost or missing when it is brought to school.
Thank you for your understanding regarding and attention to this matter.
