Principal's Corner
Friday, November 1st is a no school day for students but a busy day for our staff. Progress reports should be updated and accurate by 3 pm that day, though sometimes the system delays in showing those updated grades for up to 24 hours. If you are still seeing no update in ParentVue by Monday at noon, feel free to reach out to staff and ask how your student is doing.
In a somewhat related note, those students who are in art class have been in the midst of a transition. Our new art teacher, Isaac Marshall, started on Wednesday. We are working with IT to get updated grading information out to families, but please keep in mind that as we switch teachers in the middle of a year it can pose new technical challenges. If your grades aren't updated, please be patient and allow Mr. Marshall some time to get everything taken care of. Mr. Marshall comes to us with 8 years of overseas teaching experience and with experience running his own photography business with his wife. We are glad to have him on board!
We have reached the halfway point of our first semester. It's amazing how quickly the time flies! I hope your children have enjoyed the first few weeks and made connections with staff and students that will continue to grow throughout the rest of this semester and into the next. If there is anything we can do to help, please don't hesitate to reach out to one of our staff.
Make it a great week!

8th Graders will take the PreACT 8/9
8th Grade Families,
On November 20th, all 8th grade students will be taking the PreACT8/9 assessment. This national test provides useful information that students are able to use in choosing appropriate high school courses, understanding areas of strength and areas for improvement, and even begin discussion about their college and career interests.
We are confident that your child will do their best in order to take advantage this opportunity to see their potential performance on the ACT test administered during their 10th grade year. To learn more about the test and even view a practice test, please have your child create an account @act.org/academy. Here students are able to explore resources for k-12 subjects or for ACT prep. They are also able to take quizzes on targeted subjects, track their scores and practice in areas of need.
PreACT8/9 Quick Facts Include:
- Provides a practice opportunity for the ACT within a shorter test window covering all four ACT test subjects: English, math, reading, and science.
- Is a multiple-choice, paper and pencil assessment.
- Provides both current achievement and predicted PreACT and ACT test score ranges on the familiar 1-36 ACT score scale.
- Provides Item Response and Detailed Results to help identify specific ares of strength and weakness.
- ACT Interest Inventory results provide students with a personalized view of interest and college and career alignment.
- Provides Indicators of College and Career Readiness and Progress toward the National Career Readiness Certificate.
Please mark November 20th on your calendar to avoid potential outside appointments. We are hopeful that each and every 8th grade student is in attendance in order to take full advantage of this opportunity.
TAG
Do you think your child might be TAG?
Every year all students are considered for identification as Talented and Gifted in Beaverton School District. These services are usually provided within the classroom by the teacher(s). In accordance with Oregon law, District policy defines gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.
In accordance with OAR 581-022-1310, our District is also committed to efforts in the identification of students from ethnic minorities, students with disabilities, and students who are culturally different or economically disadvantaged.
If you think your child might exhibit qualities that typically are used to describe giftedness, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form (linked below). Because we believe that parents are excellent observers of their child’s potential, we invite your input into this nomination process. This parent form is based on the Kingore Observation Inventory that is used by classroom teachers in the fall for a six-week period of time. Circle those characteristics that describe your child and provide supporting examples whenever possible. While completing this form does not guarantee that your child will be tested, it will give your school’s TAG committee valuable additional information in the nomination process.
Upon receipt, your completed form becomes part of the school’s identification process. Parents will be notified regarding testing eligibility, and the required permission form will be sent to parents prior to testing. Testing can begin as early as mid-November, and identification is usually completed within six weeks.
The Parent Information Form (linked below) may be completed and returned to your school’s TAG facilitator, or the school’s office.
The Sora App is Amazing!
Students in Ms. McCartney and Ms. Hindley’s classes have been exploring the Sora reading app on their Chromebooks. Students can download eBooks and audiobooks simply by using their school district login. There are over 1,000 titles to choose from and students can browse subjects, look for a favorite title or discover a new book. Once the item is downloaded to the Chromebook (or any other device, students can still access the book without an internet connection!
Students can look for the Sora app and borrow eBooks here: library page!
