Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Scholarship
The Huntsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated is currently accepting applications for the Huntsville Alumnae Chapter Tuition Scholarships. These awards are available to African American high school seniors attending any public or private high school within Madison County who plan to attend Alabama A&M University, The University of Alabama in Huntsville, Calhoun Community or J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College as a full-time student. The scholarships are distributed on the basis of outstanding academic achievement (GPA 3.0 or above) and are for tuition only. The deadline has been extended to February 14, 2014. All applications and required documents must be submitted by this date. Applications postmarked after this date will not be considered. Hazel Green High School will host an AP Informational Night on Tuesday, February 11 at 7:00 p.m. in the cafeteria. This meeting is open for all students and parents of students who may be interested in registering for an Advanced Placement class in the 2014-2015 school year. HGHS is offering a newly developed course called Computer Science Principles. CS Principles is a one-credit course designed to introduce students to the central ideas of professional-level computing and the primary principles of computer science. Look for it on your course registration sheet this spring!!
Don't miss the spring production of Dearly Departed by the Hazel Green Dramatis Personae on Thursday, Friday or Saturday, March 6-8 at 7:00pm in the HGHS cafeteria. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased through any theatre student.
Auditions for Theatre IV are on Wednesday, February 19th in the black box at 3:00pm. All students must have a one minute monologue prepared with blocking and be ready to perform and answer questions about their character's objectives, motivations and obstacles. Please see Mr. Merritt with questions.
Drama students are selling gourmet bags of coffee for $10. The coffee company is based in Madison, AL, and helps coffee farmers in Guatemala. They sell lots of their coffee to Starbucks, but it will be available here at HGHS for a limited time! Stop by Room C109 or email Clinton Merritt at mmerritt@madison.k12.al.us to get yours today!
All students are required to have a current athletic physical on file in order to try out for any sport. Huntsville Hospital Sports Center will be conducting physicals at MVMS on Monday, April 28th from 5:00-7:00pm, and at HGHS on Monday, May 5th from 4:30-6:30 (or whenever finished). The cost at both will be $10, and a copy at HGHS will be provided for parents. Please note that physicals signed by a chiropractor, RN, or LPN will no longer be accepted by AHSAA. All physicals must be signed by a MD or DO (orthopedic doctor).
On Saturday, February 22, Meridianville Middle School Band will host a Taco Luncheon and Auction in the MVMS Cafeteria and Gym! All proceeds benefit the MVMS Band Program!

Cap and Gown pictures will be taken on February 27 for graduating seniors ONLY. There will be no spring pictures taken for underclassmen this year.
The Yearbook staff is now selling yearbooks AT SCHOOL. If you did not buy online but you would still like to purchase a yearbook, please see Mrs. Brady or a yearbook staff member to order yours. Quantities are VERY limited so do not wait. Once they are gone--THEY ARE GONE. Students must purchase a yearbook in order to celebrate yearbook day with us in May. Books are $65. Get yours today.

The ACT Plus Writing assessment will be given to juniors on April 23 during school. Students should be preparing for the test by using the ACT Online Prep website that all juniors received a personal user name and password to. Special Programs
Crestwood Teen Volunteer Award sponsored by The Madison County Medical Alliance will present one student with a $1500 Apple Gift Card to purchase a computer for their college career. Eligibility: Must be a senior in high school for the 2013-2014 school year and have at least a 3.0 GPA. Student must plan to enroll in a postsecondary degreed or certified program for the 2014-2015 school year, be a resident of Madison County, serve as a teen volunteer at Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Alabama (40 hours Minimum). Bsides Huntsville will be held February 8th from 9:00am-4:00pm at Calhoun Community College on Wynn Drive. It is the first security conference for high school students in the state of Alabama. Students will learn about how their interest in video games, cell phones and apps can be put to good use regarding computer security, ethical hacking, social engineering and much more! Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church is hosting the annual Historically Black College and University Fair on Saturday, February 15th (10 a.m. – 1 p.m.). West Point's Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) applications will be open to juniors through April 11th. SLE is a great week of academic, military, and physical excellence. The program consists of daily morning physical training, academic classes, afternoon sports, a day of military training, administration of the Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), a West Point tour, and social functions. The academic program features workshops and class samplings from the Academy's curriculum. All participants are housed in the cadet barracks and meals are in the Cadet Mess. The 2014 Honor’s Convocation sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. (Huntsville Chapter) will hosts its annual event to honor students across Madison County who have made the A or A/B Honor Roll during 1st semester. US Naval Academy Summer Programs - Summer STEM program is designed for rising 8th-11th graders who are interested in pursuing education in the science, technology, engineering and math fields. The Summer Seminar program, designed for rising 12th graders, gives students the opportunity to find out if they have what it takes to be a midshipmen. Huntsville Hospital Athlete of the Week – Recognition for students who not only excel as athletes but also excel in the classroom and in the community. Applicants must be seniors with at least a 3.5 GPA and include a photo with the application. Athlete of the Year will be chosen from the Athletes of the Week to receive a $1000 scholarship. Procedure for Riding the Bus with a Friend - Any student who plans to ride home on a bus with a friend or to another address should follow the procedures below. No student will be allowed to ride to a different address without verification of parent/guardian approval by a school official.
1. A parent/guardian note should be turned in before first block to the receptionist desk at the back of school. The note should contain the address and information for the bus driver and should include the date and a correct phone number for verification purposes.
2. Pick up the verified note from the receptionist during lunch.
3. Give the note to the bus driver when entering the bus at the end of the school day.
Juniors Have Free Access to ACT Online Prep - All juniors received a personal user name and password to the ACT Online Prep website. This is a great resource to be used in preparing for the ACT Plus Writing assessment which will be given to all of our juniors students on April 23 during school. First Priority/FCS meets every Tuesday morning at 7: 20 in the Choir Room. All students are welcome to attend.
Parenting Assistance Line: PAL is a service where anyone can call a toll free number 1-866-962-3030 and receive useful, practical information and assistance with developmental and parenting questions and concerns. Available 8:00am – 8:00pm (central time) Monday – Friday.
Recycle: Going green at “the Green”. The Hazel Green High School Special Education Department needs your old cell phones and ink cartridges. Items to be recycled can be given to a Special Education teacher or left for collection at the office. Your support of our recycling fundraiser is greatly appreciated.
Reward Cards: Parents/Students/Employees, please remember to use your reward cards when you visit Publix and Hazel Green Pharmacy. Every time you have them swipe your card, HGHS will receive a portion of the sale. If you need a reward card, just stop by the main office to pick one up.

Driver’s permit: Students /Parents, remember to pick up the Student Enrollment Form before you go to get your permit. The driver’s license department will not allow you to take the test unless you have this form and it cannot be faxed after you get there. These forms are good for 10 days only.
