STEPS TO LEVERAGE ACADEMIC SUPPORTS:
When students are struggling academically, there are several steps students can take to potentially leverage support.
1. Reach out to your teacher: When a student is struggling, one of the best first steps they can take is to “reach out to their teacher”. This is most productive via an in-person conversation, but utilizing an email to ask about when the best time to meet can also be helpful. The teacher is typically the person who has the best grasp on what reasonable steps to take to increase success in a class. This is also a great opportunity to have students practice their self-advocacy skills. In addition, we encourage parent communication directly with the teacher to address any issues or concerns. The direct communication between teacher, student, and parent are essential in working toward your child’s future academic success.
2. Utilize Academic Labs: Across the seven-period school day, Jerome has teachers on duty managing our academic labs to support students in the areas of math and science. Academic labs our housed in room A100, and students can access them (after obtaining permission from student’s study hall / freshman advisory teacher).
3. Utilize Freshman Mentors: If your son or daughter is a freshman, reaching out and connecting with a Celtic Advisory Program Mentor, during Freshman Advisory, is another great way to get support in the form or peer tutoring from upperclassmen.
4. Tutor Lists: In some instances (after exhausting the above resources), families may want to pursue outside tutoring resources beyond the school day. See Tutor List linked here.
MANAGING THE STRESS OF THE SCHOOL YEAR:
JUNIOR GUIDANCE LESSON:
Counselors met with juniors to discuss next steps in postsecondary planning. The junior year focuses on researching postsecondary options, specifically, The Four E’s: Employment, Education, Enlistment, and Entrepreneurship. We have attached a copy of the “Junior Prezi Presentation” that provides detailed information about our visit with juniors. This is also a time to encourage your child to check their progress on meeting graduation requirements.
FRESHMAN GUIDANCE LESSON:
Counselors met with freshman to share the resources the guidance department offers, and assist in identifying productive strategies to effectively acclimate to the world of a high school student. Time was spent explaining the resources that exist in the Jerome guidance office, as well as ensuring students have access to SchooLinks and the tools that exist within. We have attached a copy of the “Freshman Advisor” newsletter that provides detailed information about our visit with juniors.
SOPHOMORE OPTIONS INFORMATION:
Sophomore year is an exciting time for students that can serve as a launchpad into their future! The number of wonderful opportunities and course offerings students can experience increases tremendously. In order to familiarize students and families with the options available, there will be events available over the next few months prior to January scheduling.
All students will hear about the 4 E's, which represent different potential routes to embark on post-graduation that can be mixed and matched. The 4 E’s are: Education, Employment, Enlistment, and Entrepreneurship and you can learn more on this website. Sophomore students will also be learning about Jr/Sr pathway options available through each home high school, Emerald Campus, Tolles, and College Credit Plus. Students will also get to select opportunities to explore during a Sophomore Options Day held at Tolles on November 21st.
