April
April is National School Library Month!
School Library Month is a celebration of school libraries and their programs. It officially began on April 1, 1985. April Fool's Day - LOL!
New York Times bestselling author, Jason Reynolds, is the 2018 Spokesperson for School Library Month and the following is a PSA video he made about the impact of school libraries and librarians. https://youtu.be/ct5DexO-HkM
April 8 - 14 is National Library Week! The theme for 2018 is "Libraries Lead" and American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer, Misty Copeland, will serve as the Honorary Chair. In 2015, Misty was promoted to principal dancer, making her the first African American woman to be promoted to that position in the 75 year history of the Theatre!
She is a bestselling New York Times author, of a memoir, Life in Motion.
And in keeping in the spirit of National Library Week, there is a contest being held for library patrons to tell how the library led them to something of value in their lives. 1 randomly selected winner will be sent a $100 Visa gift card and a copy of Misty Copeland's award-winning book, Firebird! Check out all the deets here.
April 11th is National Bookmobile Day - I'll be sending a link of the different mobile libraries that are used across the world if you'd like to share it with your students for a brain break, etc.
April is also National Poetry Month
I would love to collaborate with you on a poetry unit whenever you plan on teaching poetry. It is one of my favorite types of lessons to teach!
We have guides to teach poetry in our Professional Materials Library and a wide range of poetry books in our general library collection; you will find these poetry books in the nonfiction section (green section) in the 811's.
Shout out to Debbie Reveles!!!!

Do you KidLit?
If not, you should! KidLit is a valuable online resource! According to their website, "KLTV is available in over 600,000 schools worldwide via our website and video distribution partners. We’re a diverse group of parents, educators, librarians, kid lit creators, and award winning filmmakers working together to create fun new ways to reinforce an appreciation of reading that children will carry with them for the rest of their lives."
Adobe for Education
Adobe Spark for Education is now available for schools! I am looking into with Mr. Poorte and in the meantime, you may sign up for a personal account at their website below. I signed up and quickly created a flyer in seconds. You gotta love it and it is completely free now! Woo-hoo!

What might a typical day in the library involve? Well, an average day might invovle at least 25 or more individual students coming in on passes and approximately 7-10 classes coming in to check in/out books. I might be helping out students needing assistance with Destiny Quest (our online public access catalog), book selection, late/lost books and/or fines. Also, I might be working with the office and taking care of student's and their accounts when they are being withdrawn from our system, and filling book requests for teachers. I could be hosting story time for PK and/or 1st grade. Books are being reviewed, curated, barcoded, labeled, stamped, archived and/or entered into the library management system. I may be requesting Marc records for books not already catalogued in our district. Materials/Equipment may be checked in/out, reshelved, weeded and repaired. I fulfill intercampus mail requests. Sometimes, if I am successful, I will help with the Zone 1 printers. I honor requests for and/or add PSA's, etc. to the morning announcement videos. I compile, review, and analyze circulation reports. I also print out lost, missing and/or new patron and book barcodes. Some days, I might be teaching a research, coding or poetry lesson. I could be working online or in person on a collaborative lesson or activity with another school or a member of our staff. These are just a few of the goings on in the library on a typical day! Of course, I am never to busy to stop and visit with my patrons! See you soon and remember please let me know if I can help you with ANYTHING!
