Hello from the principal's desk!

April 9, 2018

Hello all!

Welcome back to school!! Spring break is over, and I for one, and thrilled to get back to work. I got plenty of sleep, and had lots of down time to read, eat good food and spend time with my family and friends. We even got up to the snow in Tahoe before it all melted away! I hope you also got to spend some relaxing time with your kids before sending them back to us this morning. The screams of joy from our kids as they saw their friends and teachers was priceless! Mr. Lundholm and I made a new edition of our podcast today, check it out below this write up. It's only 10 minutes long ;).

One of the important events coming up include two meetings from the PTA called Dreamers and Doers. The first of two meetings is THIS Saturday, Aprill 14th from 9-12. We will meet here at school and DREAM about what we want Ruby Bridges to be. How can PTA help us become an even more amazing school? Where do we need to grow? Come participate with PTA leaders to envision it! We meet again on Saturday, May 5th to put our dreams into reality. This is the DOERS meeting. Please RSVP for the meetings here - http://evite.me/vxyRV5fnG2 or by signing up in the office. Please come help!

Our 5th grade Science Camp is over! Our campers went up into the hills of Scotts Valley (by Santa Cruz) and hiked, got Science education on environmental issues and biology and did some team building. The amenities were lovely, and everyone arrived home safely and better because of the trip. Special thanks to our 5th grade teachers and parent chaperones for making the trip, and for taking care of all of our kiddos! Look below for some pics of the adventure!

Our annual State testing, the CAASPP (California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress) will be starting in May for students in grades 3-5. We are really excited to show off all that we have learned this year! Please talk to your students about this test, and challenge them to do their best. We are trying to think of a school-wide prize if we can ALL do our best on the test! If you are interested in learning more about it, check out some practice questions here http://capt.tds.airast.org/student. Click through and pick a grade to check it out!

Special note we have one of our final PTA meetings of the year this Wednesday, April 11, at 6:15. We will be voting on PTA board positions for next year. We are still looking for a few last folks to round out the crew. Do you have a little extra time on your hands? No extra time but a desire to be of service to the school? Available to help us organize our finances? Help us with our membership drive? Thanks for all that you do!

With love and gratitude,

Jesse Woodward

Walking School Bus

We are starting a couple of different Walking School Buses to school this month! Please read the graphic below, and print out the file below that if interested in helping. This will be a great way to reduce traffic and congestion around the school and improve safety for ALL of our kids. Special thanks to Alameda County Safe Routes to School for helping us organize these events!

Trait of the month

The trait for the month of April is Self-Control. We want kids to be able to handle their emotions if they start to get out of control, either being too silly or the other end, getting too mad or sad. What can kids do if they need to take a break? What sorts of calming strategies are they learning at school or at home? Let's talk about it!

Ruby Wrap

I just started listening to the BEST kid podcast! It is a story, probably most appropriate for middle school kids, but my third grader listened to it and loved it. Check it out, it is the Unexplainable Disappearance of Mars Patel, and you can find it here www.marspatel.com. It's free!

Social Media presence

We are going to really work hard to share all the wonderful things going on this year through our PTA Facebook page, PTA Instagram, and school Twitter. Please try and participate along with us! It is super fun when we can all enjoy the MANY positive events that happen here, even if we weren't there in person to see them!
