Eagle's Eye View
Parent Edition, 1 September 2016
From the Principal
Dearest Padres de Zarrow and Awesome Stakeholders,
We have started our first part of the year and it has been a huge success thus far! I am proud to announce that we had the highest attendance in TPS for the first week. Thank you to our teachers and students for making school a great place to be, and thank you to you all for making sure that your children were at school and on time. It is of the utmost importance to be in school and you all have made sure that your success is our success. So, I have to say THANK YOU for your commitment to Zarrow’s excellence.
I would also like to say WELCOME to all of our new families at Zarrow! We are excited to have you at our school and hope that you are ready for the best experience in your child’s educational career. We promise to do our best as we continue to better ourselves and our teaching pedagogies in the field of education, as well as bilingual education.
I’d also like to take a moment to welcome our newest Amity teachers: Srta. Fuentes from Chile, Srta. Mena from Spain, Srta. Revilla from Spain, Srta. Sanz from Spain, and Srta. Niño from Colombia. They are great assets to our program and we are thrilled to have them with us. All of our teaching assistants are great, and we are blessed to have them with us. I have to thank our amazing families who have agreed to participate in hosting these wonderful visiting teachers, as well as our Foundation for helping fund these positions. You all have no idea how beneficial it is to have them with us.
AND, we have a new amazing 5th grade teacher, Sr. Lopez. He is from Spain and has been a great addition to the Zarrow family. His excitement for teaching is contagious and I know that we will only be richer in our school with him here part of our team! So, please welcome him if you see him.
Furthermore, I want to brag about our PTA and Foundation. Last year, they worked so well together for the betterment of our school to ensure that we, at Zarrow, not only maintained our status quo, but actually increased what was taken away due to budget issues. We are able to have a teaching assistant in all PK-5th grade classes, minus one. In that classroom we have a great assistant who actually shares her talents between both rooms as they next door to each other. Another example of how wonderful everyone works TOGETHER as we keep Zarrow great in so many way!
Lastly, I am excited to see everyone for Expectations Night on September 6th. (Detailed information to come.) It will be a very informative night for you all. We will discuss school expectations for students, as well as for parents. ;-) I want to make sure to keep you all as informed as possible about what we are doing this year and the exciting things that will be occurring all year. So, please make sure to read your Eagle’s Eye View: Parent Edition when it comes. It will be something that you all won’t want to miss. I will, also, being including information about education in these editions. These articles, like last year, will be researched-based and help shed some light on topics that directly affect our school, as well as let you all know more about this amazing profession.
We believe in you, and thank you for believing in us and in our immersion program. It’s going to be a great year because everyone here is truly remarkable!
All my best…always,
Sr. Kellito

Sor Kellito

Focus on Foundation
Dear Zarrow Family,
On behalf of The Henry Zarrow International School Education Foundation, Inc. (known simply as “Foundation”), I want to welcome you all to another exciting year here at Zarrow!
Foundation plays a vital role in ensuring your children continue to receive a world class education at Zarrow! Although we are a separate entity from the PTA, we do work closely with our great PTA, our principal, & other staff to fill the funding gaps that cannot otherwise be filled. Due to continued funding cuts to public education, these gaps have NEVER been greater! With that, I just want to give you a brief overview of the areas of the school that we are currently funding:
1. 4 Domestic Teacher Assistants (formerly called “paras” in error) & 5 AMITY Interns for a total of 9 positions. This enhances your child’s educational process, keeps teachers happy by giving them extra resources, & effectively makes class sizes feel much smaller.
2. Exchange Scholarships These are provided on a needs basis to help send children on exchange trips to Spain or Costa Rica that may not otherwise be able to participate. This year we were able to help send 8 children from Zarrow.
3. Exchange program & Global Exchange Coordinator This includes funding the Exchange
Coordinator position, & helps support our kids that go on exchange trips, kids that come to our school from Spain, & our AMITY (i.e. international/native speaking) interns.
4. Host family stipends Provides support for our families who host an AMITY intern for either 1 semester or for the full school year.
These are just some of the unique things that Foundation supports that help make Zarrow the best in Oklahoma, even when compared to most private schools in the state. This does come at a price though! Our funding needs for Foundation going forward are $135,000! This may seem like a daunting amount, but I am confident that we can all pull together as a Zarrow family, accomplish this fundraising goal, & continue to KEEP ZARROW GREAT!
We will be kicking off our annual S.O.S. (Save Our Staff/School) fundraising campaign at the end of September & our theme this year is GO FOR THE GOLD! This will include onetime gifts as well as pledges. We would love to have 100% participation in this effort, & encourage you ALL to give what you can. Also, we would like you to ask your employers & other business in the community to consider giving &/or matching funds. We are a 501(c)(3), so all donations are tax deductible.
I look forward to getting to know you all throughout this year!!
Sincerely,
Jonathan Arnold

Counselor's Corner
On Friday, we had our first Character Education Assembly . This year we will have one character assembly every month. At each assembly we will introduce one life skill that students and faculty will work on to improve our character and maintain a loving and positive climate at Zarrow. Every grade will have the opportunity to present to the student assembly.
This year two classes that best exemplify the character trait will be honored. Each class will have their picture taken by PTA volunteer, J J Burnam with Sr. Kellito and their teachers. The class photos will be displayed on the Walk of Fame for the month. In addition, the winning classes will have a blue prize ribbon displayed on their classroom door. There is a committee of teachers who will sneak and peek when the students are in the halls, when they are in the cafeteria, when they are on the playground and when they are in their class evaluating who best represents the life skill.
What is exciting about Class of the Month is students and teachers will work together as a class. It takes everyone. The emphasis is students are learning and practicing the character trait together. If a student forgets, the student will be supported with a gentle and loving reminder to listen to the teacher when she is teaching, for example. Life is a process whereby we work to become the best person and best class we can be.
The norms for respect presented by Mrs. Tschida’s fifth grade class are the following for the following grades.

Third and Fourth
(When you finish your exam do not speak with other students).
(Respect means not talking when the teacher is talking).
Fifth
(Be a good example for the ambassadors that come from Spain and Cosata Rica).
(Respect means to listen to the teachers when we go to Spain or Costa Rica).
