Falco Newsletter April 4th - 17th
2021-22 Newsletter for Five Oaks Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Happy Spring Falcon Families!
We’ve had a good week back at school after our break and have lots to look forward to this month.
Our fabulous PTO is beginning a fund raiser April 5!
6th grade Outdoor School (ODS) will be April 20-22. It will look different than ODS in the past due to ongoing Covid protocols. 6th grade students received a packet about ODS in science. Please review this with your student to ensure any permission slips are signed and you know what your student needs to do to prepare for their outings!
April 14-15th are no school days for students due to staff development and grading. This means we are nearing the end of the third quarter and are ready to start the last quarter of this school year. It’s amazing how fast this year is going!
We are partnering with the Washington County Health Department to offer two parent educational classes in April! Our first session is April 13 from 7:00-8:00 pm. The first session is all about addiction in teens and preteens including resources to help support parents in having hard conversations about addiction including substances, technology, and even gambling. The second session will be April 28 from 7:00-8:00 pm. This session is called QPR: Question, Persuade, Respond and is about talking to students about suicide and mental health. It is an invaluable resource to have at hand. All sessions will be presented via zoom.
April 19th is a Community Service Day in honor of Earth Week/Month. This day also ties in to our year long focus on building community and taking care of our land. It is also an early release day. Students will spend most of the day engaged in various service projects including; litter patrol in the community, making inspirations rocks, campus beautification, organizing an equipment collection drive, and several others. We are asking for your help! If you have any of the following items (or can collect over the next few weeks) it would be greatly appreciated.
Paper towel and toilet paper rolls (just the rolls not the TP or paper towels)
Cardboard egg cartons
Paintable rocks (need to smooth on at least one side)
Old fabric scraps
Mod Podge
Mini paint pots (like the ones that come in paint by number kits)
Small brushes (like water color brushes)
Gardening gloves (used is great!)
Gardening tools (if you can loan a few spades, small shoves, or a garden hoe we will return it!)
Small plants (annuals that need a home in the ground if you have extra)
Volunteers! Check Better Impact if you would be available to help us on this day!
A few dates to keep in mind for May and June:
State testing is May 9-13
May 26 is an early release day
- May 30th is Memorial Day
¡Feliz primavera familias Falcon!
PTO meeting is Thursday, April 21st at 7pm via Zoom

What does college and career readiness look like?
No matter what post secondary path high school graduates choose, students must develop certain essential skills to design their own futures: critical thinking, collaboration, reading, writing, and relationship building. The development of these skills is rooted in belief in self. If students believe they are capable, there is a foundational confidence to learn and a resiliency to overcome setbacks. When educators believe in students, learning and confidence are activated. With teacher support for developing a growth mindset and the academic skills they need for future success, students grow to see their capabilities and find their own way.
What Students Need AVID students receive intentional support and mentoring in three major areas that help them become confident individuals who can successfully navigate life and career: 1. Rigorous Academic Preparedness — Students have the academic skills and can successfully complete rigorous college and career preparatory curriculum and experiences. 2. Opportunity Knowledge — Students research opportunities, set goals, make choices that support their long-term aspirations, and successfully navigate transitions to the next level. 3. Student Agency — Students believe in and activate their own potential, build relationships, persist through obstacles, and exercise their academic, social, emotional, and professional knowledge and skills. By placing students in a learning setting that engages them in rigor with support, opportunities to explore their future pathways, and deliberate instruction in self-management and leadership, students develop the agency and skills that will serve them for life. With AVID, students excel regardless of their circumstances, socioeconomic status, ethnicity, or English proficiency

Walking and Rolling is Good for the Earth!
April is the month we celebrate Earth Day and one way you can help our planet and combat climate change is to replace car trips with active ones! 2 miles of driving = 1.6 lbs of carbon emissions. Think about local car trips that your family takes often. Maybe it is a trip to the park or a friend’s house. Map your route and try walking or biking instead. We often think places are farther than they seem. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your location and be amazed at what your body can do for you!
