Principal's Message
Writing this message is bittersweet as it will be the final ISB Newsletter message I share. Eleven years ago when I joined the ISB Community, what impressed me most was the connection between students and staff. Both demonstrated a remarkable shared commitment to sustaining and growing a learning community where people worked together respectfully and with focus. Over the past decade, ISB's average high school population expanded by nearly 100 students as our school's implementation of the IB Diploma Program consistently earned national recognition as one of the nation's top performing high schools. With the growth, we refined our MYP and DP implementation, ensured a 6th-12th grade vertically aligned program of study, expanded student activities, and sustained our distinctive and inclusive school culture.
Accolades and awards aren't what makes ISB a special place. It is truly the relationships that matter. As I began to pack up my office last week, the sight of a child's Matchbox car brought both a smile and tears. Beginning when my own sons were young and continuing even today I keep in my office crayons and small toys to entertain little ones when they're on campus with their parents. I have vivid memories of playing cars in the main hallway with a particular preschooler who really wasn't interested in his older sister's choir concert. That preschooler is now an ISB 9th Grader. The sight of that car made me reflect on the countless young people and their families that I've had the honor of serving and underscored how much I will miss the ISB family. I planned to share a touching quote often attributed to E.E. Milne, but at ISB I've learned to verify and cite my sources . . . turns out he didn't write the sentiment at all. The things ISB has taught all of us!
I wish every Dragon success this school year and in your future journeys and am confident that our learning community will continue to thrive under the leadership of Dr. Janice Adams. Wishing your family a safe, healthy, and relaxing winter break!
Warmly,
Jill O'Neill

ISB's annual "no homework weekend" has grown into a no homework Winter Break. Teachers have been asked to refrain from assigning projects or tests that are due the Monday or Tuesday we return from Winter Break. Stepping away from Zoom calls and screen time will hopefully be a welcome break for students and free up time to spend with families and winter traditions. Even with the break from regular homework, we know that Seniors are busy with college and scholarship applications, as well as their IB Internal Assessments and Theory of Knowledge due soon. We also recognize that this break gives students who are behind in their coursework a chance to catch up on missed lessons and assignments. We hope that everyone reads throughout the break and returns in January with renewed energy as we wrap up the first semester.

Math Tutoring
Need help in math? Here are two possible resources:
ISB's Math Honor Society is hosting Math Tutoring sessions every Wednesday from 12-1 pm (on school days only). Students can find the Zoom link and password in their grade level Canvas Course. Please do not share the link with anyone outside of the ISB community.
Monday-Thursday from 5-6 pm, Western Oregon University's Math Education students are staffing a daily math homework help session for students in Grades 4-12. Each session will have at least two tutors available and on Tuesdays a Spanish-speaking tutor will be available. All sessions are recorded to protect both WOU and 4-12 grade students. WOU expects that all students are supervised by an adult during the tutoring sessions. Questions? Contact WOU's Dr. Rachel Harrington at harringtonr@wou.edu or 503-838-8831.
