General News! Week of January 4-6th
Welcome Back!
Hopefully your winter break was everything you wished for and you all had an opportunity to recharge a bit. You will need that energy because we will be hitting the ground running!
As we begin this 2nd semester we would like to take a minute just to remind you of a few essential points... throughout the first semester we have made every effort to keep you informed about what is going on in our classrooms, provide any information we could to support work or study that should be completed at home, offered your children a number of opportunities to receive extra help, complete late or missing assignments,or just be there for you in any way that we can. Many of you have taken advantage of these opportunities...sadly we have a number of students who have not , and are currently concerned about promotion for next year.
We spoke to everyone on our team this morning in an effort to reinforce how important each day, and every assignment we are asking them to complete are. There are less than 70 school days until we will take the 8th grade EOG. During that same time frame we will be working on registration for the high school classes they would like to take next year. It is our goal to see that everyone is headed there next year, but that can only happen when we all take some ownership...teachers, students, parents, and our administration.Together we can all achieve more, so please help us reach our goal!
One last request...please touch base with your child and ask them if they are prepared for class each day with the tools for success, i.e. pencils, paper, etc...
Thank you for your continued help and support!

Social Studies- Mr. Salser
The students will be diving into Reconstruction at the end of the Civil War and how the US was put back together. We will focus on Lincoln's plan, the Congressional plan, and Andrew Johnson's plans for Reconstruction.
Science- Mrs. Allen
This week in Science, we will finish covering the topic of Sound. We will complete some reviews in class to get back into the school groove, explore with some activities, and have a test on Friday to show what we have learned on waves throughout this unit. Students are more than welcome to study the Kahoot I have created at home. If they log in to my account on kahoot create, they will find this study tool titled, “Parts of a Wave”. The username is ChynnaAllen and the password is password1 . Our mastery assessment is just around the corner, so let’s get caught back up and have another great week! J
Math- Mrs. McKinney
Volume, volume, volume! We will finish this week working on volume. The students are not expected to memorize the formulas for volume, they will be given the formulas on both the unit checkpoint and on the Milestones test. The students need to be able to identify the parts of the solid they need to calculate the formula, and then perform the calculations. Wednesday we will work on the volume of cylinders and cones, and Thursday we will find the volume of spheres. Friday will be a review of all three shapes and students will learn what happens when you change different dimensions. I will teach the students the difference between an exact answer, and an approximation. Please don’t be alarmed if you see answers like 32π because those will be the exact answers. The students will take a unit checkpoint on volume on Monday. Students will have homework every night, please ask them about it nightly. Volume, volume, volume! Language Arts- Ms. Waxman
In language arts:
This week we will be reviewing the elements of an argumentative essay. It is important that our students are able to properly compose any style of writing that they are presented with as a prompt, as well as complete their piece in a limited amount of time. This will be much of our focus during this quarter.
Our first mission will be trying to determine if Spongebob Squarepants has killed Mr. Karbs. Students will be asked to take sides, and closely examine evidence that will support their position for this task.
Hopefully our representatives for our SMMS Spelling Bee had an opportunity to study over break, and be ready to take on the other contestants on Friday, January 13th. The winner of our school contest will move onto the County Spelling Bee.
I will be introducing a new homework reading assignment to the students on Friday. The format will be similar, and students who participated in our Tween Tribune readings will be well prepared. We will also continue this quarter with our independent choice readings...hopefully students took advantage of the winter break to get some reading done, and one book out of the way!
