Owl of the Week
Congratulations to our Owl of the Week, Salyna! Her nominating teachers report "Salyna joined our Science Olympiad Team late and since has led the charge at completing the designs and builds of the two events she was placed in. Since last June, Salyna has been volunteering at the Onslow Community Outreach and during that time she has volunteered over 135 hours. This is the dedication and volunteerism we expect to see from our OWLS!"

PowerSchool
1. OVA Health and PE was only showing up as .5 credit. It has been corrected to 1 full credit. This may slightly alter overall GPAs for freshmen and sophomores as Health and PE is a regular (4.0) GPA class.
2. PowerSchool wiped out the weights to different grades in classes that calculate by percentages. For example, a test was counting the same as a small homework assignment. Those grades have been corrected with the correct grade calculations (based on the syllabus for each class).
OECHS Class Updates
Junior Seminar
We will precode ACT answer sheets and review ACT Science and Writing. I will have you pull up your grade in Blackboard during the next two seminars as well. Be prepared. If you have a D or an F in a class, be prepared to start staying until 4:30 each day (until grades improve)!
English
English II Honors: This week, students completed their study of Middle Eastern heroes in the literary work, The Kite Runner. They took their Unit 2 test, and completed presenting their projects. Grades for the first six weeks are now final.
Next week, we will begin our study of Unit 3 the Tragic Hero. Students will begin their analysis by studying Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. They have also begun their second formal essay assignment, a cultural visual rhetorical analysis. We will begin pre-writing next week, and have a formal peer review on Thursday, February 20. Final drafts are due that Friday, February 21. Please encourage students to show you their OneNote, should you have questions on upcoming assignments for English II Honors.
English IV Honors: Students have completed all process to finish their Rhetorical Analysis Essay. The essay is due by midnight Sunday, February 16, 2020. Students wrote the introduction and an outline for the body paragraphs. On Thursday, students participated in a blind peer review. Each student was assigned a random number and the number was used as the identifier on the introduction. Students then completed a guided peer review of four other student generated introductions, using their identifier. Student feedback indicated that they liked the, ensured, anonymous reviews. They felt they were neither swayed nor intimidated by their relationship with the writer. Next week we will dive into British Literature.
On Monday, February 17, 2020 there will be a brief discussion about the Graduation Project. Students may opt in or out of the now non-required project. If students opt into the project, teacher-student work time will be scheduled during seminar time.
Math
Honors Math 3: Students are currently studying Unit 2 Advanced Functions. On Monday we will review what was covered last week and learn how to add and subtract rational expressions. Students will also learn how to solve rational equations as well and have a test on Friday.
Honors Math 4: We will be finishing up Unit 3 on Exponential and Logarithmic Functions and Equations on Monday, and taking the Unit 3 Test on Tuesday. On Wednesday we will begin the Trig portion of the course. Unit 4 is the Intro to Trigonometry. We will cover Angles and their Measures along with the 6 Basic Trig Functions next week.
Social Studies
Civics and Economics: This week we finished our study of the process of writing the Constitution. We spent a lot of time looking at Federalists and Anti-Federalists and their arguments for and against the Constitution. Friday we began our study of the Constitution itself- beginning with the Preamble and the concept of Federalism, Enumerated, and Reserved Powers. Next week we will continue to focus on Federalism and the responsibilities of the three branches of government.
AP WH: This week we continued to talk about the Enlightenment and how it influenced the Haitian and Latin American Revolutions. We began studying the Industrial Revolution and it's beginnings in Great Britain and impact on social and economic structures. Next week we will look at the impacts of technology and governments in the Industrial Age.
American History Honors: Students had a good start to AH-1 and the first grading period grades are complete. We have discussed the need for a little more “detail” in their maps & other coursework and the importance of convincing the reader/grader of the “significance” in answering questions (APWH Exam prep!) This week we began our study of The Era of Good Feelings & Jacksonian Democracy. Between lectures, students have been working on their study guides & period maps. Today we discussed how to complete their Short Answer Questions (SAQ’s) for the APWH Exam using the “A-C-E“ technique. We will use the same style in AH-1 in order to help prepare for APWH writing. The Unit 3 test & all work will be due on Monday, February 24.
Science
Biology Honors: This week we continued with genetics and human genetic disorders. We finished the week discussing DNA. Next week we will start the week talking about Genetic Technology and then EVOLVE into Darwin's Theory of Evolution.
