PCMS WEEKLY UPDATE
January 7, 2022
Good Afternoon PCMS Families!
Hopefully you and your families were able to stay safe, healthy, and enjoy the holidays. It was a great first week back from break - a little too short for us but probably a little too long for you! COVID continues to be a reality that just won't go away and is impacting us greatly. We did start back to school with masks optional, however, they are still mandatory on the buses. Please continue to monitor your child’s health and don’t send them to school if they are exhibiting any COVID-like symptoms. We’re trying to stay as healthy as we can here!
Have a wonderful weekend, stay healthy, and GO PIRATES!!
THIS WEEK'S CHARACTERSTRONG FOCUS
Here’s a quick recap of what we talked about this week in our CharacterStrong sessions - some good stuff right here!
6th Grade learned about Understanding Emotions. In this session, we learned about how to handle our emotions by thinking about them and a strategy of how to calm ourselves down when we’re upset about something.
7th Grade talked more about Choosing to Care. The focus of this session was on the importance of caring about others and caring when we can tell others are unhappy or could use some help.
8th Grade talked more about Practicing Regulation. Middle schoolers experience their emotions especially powerfully and we can all struggle to handle strong emotions well. In this session, we learned two new ways of talking to ourselves that can help us stay in control in emotional situations.
CHARACTERSTRONG FAMILY DARE
PIRATES IN ACTION!
There wasn't a ton of action for our Pirates with this being our first week back from break. Next week we get back in the swing of things! Here's a look back at the week and all of the activities that our kids participated in.
Girls Basketball
This week our girls basketball teams hosted Congress Middle School on Thursday and fell to the Cougars in both the A and B games.
Boys Basketball
This week our boys basketball teams traveled to Congress Middle School on Thursday. The A Team fell in a close contest while the B Team defeated the Cougars.
PACE PROGRAM 3RD QUARTER SIGN UP
It’s time to sign up for our 3rd quarter PACE (Pirate After Class Events) program. We kicked off this program last quarter and have had excellent feedback. PACE for 3rd quarter runs January 18 through March 3, 2022.
We are including some very basic details in this email, but please take some time to review the slideshow and watch the video linked below. The slideshow and video will explain the details of the PACE program and provide dates for each activity. There are limited spots available so be sure to sign your student up now.
After watching the video, please click on the form below to sign your kids up to attend PACE. Students can sign up for one activity per day. When you sign up, please make sure you select each day that your child will be attending throughout the 3rd quarter. If you need to make any changes, please contact me (crawfort@platteco.k12.mo.us).
8TH GRADE FAMILIES: HIGH SCHOOL ENROLLMENT INFORMATION
Platte County High School counselors will be visiting PCMS on January 25 to talk to the 8th graders about their course selections for next year and answer any questions they may have. At home, please continue to have discussions with your 8th grade student about the courses he or she would like to take next year. Students will need to have their course selections finalized by February 17. On February 17, the high school counselors will return to PCMS to enroll 8th graders for next year. You may access your students ICAP (Individual Career and Academic Plan) on the Class of 2026 Google Classroom. This is the form they are using to indicate which courses they want to take next year. Students need to select seven (7) credits for next year.
Please do not hesitate to contact Kim Schank (schankk@platteco.k12.mo.us), 8th grade counselor, if you have questions or need assistance. Click here for a timeline of events related to high school enrollment.
8th GRADE FAMILIES: PCHS CURRICULUM NIGHT ON JAN 18
PCHS is planning an 8th grade parent night on January 18, 2022, 6:30pm in PCHS's Wilson Auditorium. The purpose of Curriculum Night is to allow you to learn about each core class (English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies) from the department's perspective. In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held virtually.
We encourage both the student (current 8th graders) and parent(s) to attend so that all can receive the information about courses which are offered at Platte County High School. This will greatly assist you and your student in the planning process and in course selection for the 2022-23 school year. If you would like more information, please contact your student's counselor: Kim Schank, PCMS Counselor, or Becky Brandt, Barry Counselor.
SPRING MUSICAL AUDITIONS- INTO THE WOODS JR.

IMPORTANT IMMUNIZATION INFO FOR 8TH GRADERS
If your student is now over the age of 11, they can receive their Meningococcal (MCV) vaccine and their Tetanus, Diphtheria & Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine, both of which are required for his/her 8th-grade year per Missouri State Law.

PIRATES ROCK CHARACTER TRAIT - INDIVIDUALITY
Pirates R.O.C.K. (Raising Outstanding Character Kids) is a program designed to surround our families with examples of strong character traits through school experiences, at home, and reinforced in their community. Each month our community focuses on a specific character trait, and students are recognized for exhibiting these traits: Self Confidence, Pride, Responsibility, Citizenship, Compassion, Individuality, Self Control, Integrity, Perseverance, Respect, Honesty, and Cooperation.
