Progress Monitoring Forms
According to grading guidelines -
Kindergarten teachers will complete a Progress Monitoring Checklist quarterly to accompany each student’s report card. The Progress Monitoring Checklist will provide parents a more comprehensive overview of their child’s ability to perform essential skills and strategies within his/her developmental reading level.
While the Progress Monitoring Checklist is required to accompany the kindergarten report card quarterly, it is recommended for consideration to use with first, second, and third grade students performing below grade level in reading at each reporting period.
Progress monitoring checklists can be found on the Small Group site - https://sites.google.com/vbschools.com/elasmallgroupinstruction/home. Each checklist is listed under each reading level.
Please ensure these are sent home with report cards per grading guidelines above.

Lynnhaven Elementary was one of only five elementary schools in the division represented at this year’s summit.
The trip was organized by School Counselor, Ms. Demetria Cofield and chaperoned by Mr. Vincent Epps, School Social Worker. Ms. Molly Glad was the bus driver.

Virginia Working Conditions and School Climate Survey
The window is open for the Virginia Working Conditions and School Climate Survey for all school-based licensed teachers and staff. *Licensed staff members for the VDOE Working Conditions Survey include the following: administrator, teacher, teacher/instructional aide, specialists (e.g., reading, mathematics), school counselor, school nurse, school psychologist, school resource officer or security officer, library media specialist, school social worker and other licensed staff. There are two versions of the Working Conditions Survey for staff (i.e., teachers, staff).
This is a new survey from the Virginia Department of Education and will take the place of the VBCPS School Climate survey this year. Please note the following regarding the survey:
- the purpose of the survey is to assess working conditions in school settings,
- individual staff responses are anonymous,
- aggregate results will be available to both VDOE and VBCPS for reporting and action,
- VBCPS has chosen Jan. 28 through Feb. 15 for staff to complete the survey and
- additional Navigational Marker questions, necessary to assess progress on Compass to 2020 goals, will be asked at the conclusion of the VDOE survey portion.
Mrs. Breaux is hoping for 100% participation from all staff to give the school division and her feedback.

What It Means to Be a Social Justice Educator
“If we truly want to change the world we live in, education is the best place to start,” says Crystal Belle (Rutgers University/Newark) in this article in Education Week. U.S. public schools can live up to their purported role as social equalizers, but Belle believes this happens only through the work of front-line social justice educators. Here’s what happens in their classrooms:
- Acknowledging who is there. Effective teachers take the time to learn about students’ families, cultures, and communities.
- Starting with the knowledge students have. Kids walk into school with a rich fund of personal and cultural knowledge, but also with gaps that need to be filled. Wise teachers build on what students already know, incorporate it into the curriculum, and address what’s missing.
- Creating a curriculum map and unit plans for the year. Social-justice teacher teams start with the desired outcomes and plan backwards from there so that students finish the year with essential knowledge, skills, and habits of mind.
- Being honest about oneself. This means acknowledging and healing the implicit biases that are part of growing up in the U.S.
- Encouraging students to question everything. Students need to develop their critical faculties, and classroom dynamics and curriculum are a great place to start.
“What Is Social Justice Education Anyway?” by Crystal Belle in Education Week, January 23, 2019 (Vol. 38, #19, p. 18-19), https://bit.ly/2sSgD5E; Belle can be reached at crystal.belle@rutgers.edu.

Here Comes the Bus®
- See the location of their child’s bus both before and after school
- Confirm that their child’s bus has arrived at the bus stop, at school or both

Media and Communications will inform parents via a division-wide Alert Now.
Career Teacher Application
The Career Teacher Application for 2019 will be available for downloading from the Intranet (Forms/Human Resources/Career Teacher Application) beginning in February.
Every teacher requesting consideration for a Career Teacher allowance needs to:
- Complete the Career Teacher Application 2019.
- Collect supporting documentation as directed by the building principal to verify actions in each of the four categories of the form. (Teachers keep all of the supporting documentation with a copy of the completed application for their records.)
- Request the signature of the building principal on the cover sheet between Feb. 1, 2019, and the last day of school, June 21, 2019.
- If applicable to the application, include a copy of the National Board Certification if not already on file in the Licensure Office.
All applications must be scanned by a designated school office member into LaserFiche using the LaserFiche Document Drop folder and the Career Teacher Application Template. Once the successful scanning of the application is complete, teachers should retain the original documents for their records. At Lynnhaven Elementary, please submit applications to Mrs. Breaux, and she will work with the office associates to get your application scanned into LaserFiche.
Applicants will be notified by email upon receipt of their application. Once the Career Teacher Application is reviewed and processed, the teacher will receive another email indicating approval or denial of the application. Those teachers with questions about the Career Teacher Application, or those who need assistance with the completion of the application, may contact John Ogden, Human Resources Specialist, in the Department of Human Resources at 263-1133 or John.Ogden@vbschools.com.
