Harvey Dunn Elementary - Important Dates to Remember for Families 2020-21
Principals Corner
Hello Harvey Dunn Elementary Families,
Today was the first day where we had all students in the building! It was great to have everyone together again. The first 2 days of school for Jr. K-5 provided us with the opportunity to practice school procedures in smaller groups, but it also helped everyone to be prepared for a modified A/B schedule. If your children have different last names, please know that they may all attend on the same schedule for modified school days. Please notify classroom teachers so they can have an accurate list for A/B attendance in the event that we need to utilize this model in the future.
In addition to working to help support students learn in the building each day, we will continue to keep safety of all in the forefront. These safety measures in the school include reduced numbers of students in the lunchroom and on the playground, time between specials for cleaning, reduced numbers transitioning in the hallways at one time, reminders for mask use and hand-washing/sanitizing. At home, thank you for taking time each morning to review the Daily Screening to verify that your child is feeling well enough to come to school. A link for this screening is below.
Looking forward to creating strong partnerships between school and home as we navigate the new school year.
All the best,
Mrs. Chamberlain, Principal
Odds and Ends:
- We will not be able to share birthday treats in the school this year. Thank you for doing your part to keep reduce the spread of germs.
- Visitors will not be allowed into the building for 1st quarter. This will be reviewed closer to the end of the quarter to make determinations for 2nd quarter.
- We will not be completing whole group screenings in 1st, 3rd, and 5th for vision and hearing due to sharing equipment and large numbers of volunteers. Screenings will only be done on individual basis upon teacher/parent concerns.
Painting the Playground - Thank you volunteers!

Chromebook/IPad Devices
- Jr. K-1st Grade will be given an Ipad and 2-5th grade students will be provided with a Chromebook for their individual use.
- Your child will begin bringing their device home daily when we receive your acknowledgement of accepting or declining the Computer Damage/Loss Cooperative Program Application Form.
- Students should bring their device and charger daily between school and home.
- These items will be placed in a large zip-lock bag to keep these items together. Both IPads and Chromebooks are also in a case.
- If you have a device at home and would prefer not to transport a SFSD device, that is okay. Please notify your child's teacher that you will not check-out a device this year. You will need to access the Student Seesaw app as well as Classlink on your device so you are prepared if we switch to a modified schedule or remote learning. (Classroom teachers can get you information about accessing these and login information as needed.)
Seesaw Learning Platform
As a part of the Sioux Falls School District Return to Learn plan our students, teachers, and families will have a new digital platform, SeeSaw. Seesaw supports strong relationships between teachers, students, and families. Together, we can support and celebrate your child’s learning inside and outside the classroom! In the classroom, students and teachers will be engaging in lessons and activities. At home, you have the opportunity to communicate with teachers as well as provide feedback on your students’ achievements. When teachers and families work together, outcomes improve.
What are the benefits of utilizing Seesaw as a family member?
- Makes your child’s thinking and learning visible so we can see their growth
- Opens communication between home and school
- Gives your child an authentic audience for their work -- you!
- Watch this VIDEO to better understand SeeSaw:
Teachers have already been working with students to begin utilizing this platform and have shared or will share information for parents to access this platform as well. By following the instructions for connecting and using the Seesaw Family app, you become a part of our learning team!
