Here is what's on top at Buena Vista! 1/26/2022
Note from the Principal
Good Afternoon Buena Vista Parents,
I hope you are all doing well. Can you believe we celebrated out 100th day of school this week? It was so much fun going into classrooms and seeing all of the activities. Our kindergartners dressed up like they were 100 years old and did A LOT of counting to 100. Mrs. Ong's and Ms. Shannon's 3rd grade classes used time in the afternoon to do 100 physical activities (10 sets of 10)...phew, I was tired just watching them.
There is a lot of amazing learning going on at Buena Vista. Mrs. Pacific's 4th grade class is investigating: Why do different animals need different amounts of light to see well? There was a great discussion about, depending on the type of eye an animal had, that some of them saw better in low light than bright light. Students were able to complete a model to simulate how the Animal "A" and Animal "B" had different successes in locating their prey.
In Mrs. Ong's 3rd grade class students were working on writing persuasive essays...they had amazing topics---"All third graders should learn a second language" and "It is better to stay inside and play with a sibling." I can't wait to read the final draft and see if I am convinced!
In Mrs. Choy's 1st grade class they were practicing learning important sound pairs that make spelling easier to read in their writing. They were working together to fix some very funny writing mistakes so that they had their best spelling in their writing. They did a great job of stretching those sounds and writing the letter patterns that they knew.
I also was able to watch Mrs. Hare and Mrs. Bacci's TK students simulate precipitation in Ms. Olmos's Science Specialist class. They were able to discuss how when a cloud gets too heavy with water it is released as rain. They were given a jar with a "cloud" (a glob of shaving cream on top) and slowly added "rain" (blue water from a pipette)...as the "cloud" was weighed down, the rain started dropping into the bottom of the jar. It was messy....but a lot of fun!
I visited Mrs. Schoonmaker's kindergarten class as they were gearing up for the 100th day of school last week. She had a student helper leading her number corner for math and her whole class stopped to count aloud to 97! They made it the whole way!!! There is a picture below of just how many groups of ten that is.
We were excited to share what we have been learning with our Superintendent, Marie Morgan, when she came earlier this week for a visit. We all love to see the students having fun, working hard and learning here at Buena Vista in-person. Please continue to be safe and take care.
Respectfully,
Angela Gramlick
Principal
