Weekly Brief
1. Fall Sports
State Board approved Fall sports with a vote of 4 to 3. Our next step is presenting this to the board. We will have a lunch and learn on Friday the 25th and the ADs will make a short presentation at the board.
We will keep you posted since there are several issues that need to be resolved.
2. Thank you to Nick M and nutrition services. Over 400 families being served through our COVID19 feeding program. Schools, as you talk to families, regardless of their financial status, please make them aware of this program.
3. Continue to iron out processes for return to in-person student testing. We have tentative dates set for October 5th and 6th. Our question is, can we do it all at one site like Delcastle?
4. Attached is an infographic that Kathy D. put together in an effort to capture all of our DEI work in one comprehensive document. Nice work, Kathy! This will be distributed to policy makers, business partners, and other key community stakeholders.
5. A special thanks to Shanta R. who called me in late May/early June to discuss some potential national speakers for our DEI work. I'm glad that Tyrone Howard was chosen and thought his message was powerful.
I also want to point out another learning opportunity or teachable moment. All of us have a set of skills and one way to refine particular skills is to model after other people. Dr. Howard had a very unique of way of putting a problem before us with criticism, judgment, or indictment. That is a skill and one that I'm sure he refined. When we have the opportunity to listen to great communicators, pick up on the subtleties and skills that you can adopt.
Another example is when you listen to podcasts, don't just listen to the conversation, listen to the questioning techniques that you can eventually use when your talking to teachers about a lesson.
What am I saying: Don't just learn the obvious information that you are expected learn. Become a multi-dimensional learner and pick up other skills that will make you even more effective.
Up Ahead: From Starting Strong to Staying Strong
- Determine the best way to move forward with Fall athletics considering the numerous issues. Also our board still needs to discuss the state board's determination.
- Prepping the buildings in every way for staff and students to return. Schools immediate next step is identifying every room that will be used and those will be outfitted will all necessary PPE.
- Learning Centers for Special Education and our EL students. We hope to get this rolling ASAP.
- PSAT for Juniors. This year we will not offer the in-person PSAT/NMSQT for our students.
- Staff Town Halls. Starting next week, I will begin hosting a series of Town Halls w/ our staff to ensure that we are set to open our doors to students Oct. 19th.
